Flat-Panel Liquid Crystal Displays Demystified

One 27-inch computer monitor costs $250, while another retails for over $1200. What's the difference, other than cost? The answer lies in the details. Today's flat panel LCDs (liquid crystal displays) for computers employ different technologies for different target groups. Understanding what you're getting with a more-expensive LCD is key to knowing whether to shell out the extra money for one. Read on to learn more. Q: So what is the difference between the really expensive and the cheaper LCD computer monitors? A: There are two primary technologies behind LCDs today: One is called twisted nematic (TN) and the other is known as in-plane switching (IPS). Generally, less expensive LCDs are based on TN technology. These displays are relatively inexpensive to produce these days, which is why you see a raft of 22-inch or larger monitors at prices less than $300. TN displays used to suffer from ghosting or "shadow trails" when object were moved around on the screen. Now, however, this problem has been resolved, and the so-called response time of these displays is often a selling point. A downside of TN panels is a limited viewing angle. That means that images on screen will look their best only when you are sitting directly in front of a TN monitor. Shift to the right or left -- or look at the panel from one side or another -- and you're likely to notice that the colors "shift" somewhat and that the image on screen begins to look washed out. However, manufacturers of some TN panels have done a lot over the past few years to improve viewing angles, but generally this limitation persists. IPS technology, by contrast, was the result of efforts to improve the viewing angles of LCDs. Today, IPS panels are known for their excellent performance in this regard. IPS displays also tend to produce more... newsfactor.com »

Gilad Shalit Freed, Hostage Deal Trends on Twitter

As a five-year-old international hostage drama wound to a close today, it quickly became one of the fastest trending topics on Twitter. The hostage deal involves the long-awaited release of Gilad Shalit, a young Israeli soldier held captive by Hamas for the past five years, in exchange for Israel releasing more than 1,000 Palestinian prisoners. News of Shalit's release and the controversial agreement spread quickly around the world, creating a stream of tweets. The hashtag #GiladShalit moved along computer screens almost as quickly today as #SteveJobs did last week, following the death of the Apple co-founder and former CEO. A few days before that, #iPhone5 topped Twitter, when Apple released a new phone that turned out to be the iPhone 4S, not an iPhone 5, as expected. As of 5:30 pm Eastern time today, #GiladShalit tweets were appearing about every 10 seconds. Tweets from Netanyahu Shalit had been held by his captors since a June, 2006 raid at the border of the Gaza Strip. Sporadic 'proof of life' was sent to Israel, but he was not allowed any visits from the International Red Cross to check on his condition. A multi-year, international campaign has been waged to pressure his captors into releasing Shalit, who was kidnapped and held hostage, simply as a bargaining chip. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in his official Twitter feed, told the world on Tuesday afternoon (evening, Israel time), "We have concluded arduous negotiations with #Hamas to release #Gilad #Shalit. He will be coming home in the next few days." Other updates from IsraeliPM included, "Earlier today I have updated Aviva and Noam #Shalit about the upcoming developments," referring to the soldier's parents, and "especially thank the #Egyptian government and its security services for their role in mediation & concluding of the deal #Shalit. Among tweets in response to the news were,... newsfactor.com »

Cisco Appeals Microsoft's Skype Acquisition in EU

Cisco is battling against Microsoft's $8.5 billion Skype acquisition in the European Union's high court. Rather than trying to kill the acquisition itself, Cisco just wants to make sure Microsoft won't block other video conferencing services from interfacing with the platform. Marthin De Beer, head of Cisco's video conferencing division, noted that the world remains some distance from the goal of video calls being as easy and ubiquitous as phone calls are today. He asked his blog readers to imagine how difficult it would be if they were limited to calling people who only use the same carrier or if their phone could only call certain brands. "Cisco wants to avoid this future for video communications, and therefore today appealed the European Commission's approval of the Microsoft/Skype merger to the General Court of the European Union," De Beer said. Messagenet, a European VoIP service provider, joined Cisco in the appeal. Insisting on Interoperability De Beer was quick to mention that Cisco does not oppose the merger, but believes the European Commission should have placed conditions that would guarantee standards-based interoperability so that no single company can control the future of video communications. "This appeal is about one thing only: securing standards-based interoperability in the video calling space," De Beer said. "Our goal is to make video calling as easy and seamless as e-mail is today. Making a video-to-video call should be as easy as dialing a phone number. Today, however, you can't make seamless video calls from one platform to another, much to the frustration of consumers and business users alike." Cisco is calling for open standards in a move to accelerate innovation, create economic value, and increase choice for users of video communications, entertainment and services. This is critical, De Beer noted, because the world will be home to nearly 3 billion Internet users... newsfactor.com »

Discovering the Manifold Benefits of CRM

Customer Relationship Management, or CRM, software has and is evolving -- and so are the benefits of using it. But what are those benefits in the age of iPads and cloud computing? There are perhaps too many to list in one article. But we asked a few industry players to chime in on what they feel are the most relevant benefits in the current market. The Mobile, Social Factor We asked Mike Snyder, principal of Sonoma Partners, a Microsoft Dynamics CRM partner, to offer his thoughts on the plus sides for CRM software today. Those benefits go beyond simple contact management, he said. "Today's CRM systems, such as Microsoft Dynamics CRM, offer a high degree of customization to track and manage all types of relationships that businesses enter into, from client contracts to vendor management," Snyder said, noting that companies can track social interactions with customers and address them in the arena of their choice, whether it's Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn. "Finally, modern CRM systems such as Microsoft Dynamics CRM enable mobile access to data on almost any device such as Android, iPhone, BlackBerry or iPad." Facilitating Distributed Workforces Barry Givens, director of product management for CRM at Avanade, shared with us his own views on the benefits of CRM. He started by pointing to business processes that are much more complex than they've ever been. That, he said, makes CRM solutions absolutely essential to managing the collaboration necessary to sell, deliver service, and market to customers. "Many first- and second-generation CRM systems were built to capture information about work after it had been done, and managers were the only people in the organization who gained any benefit from the data -- if it was captured at all," Givens said. "Today, CRM solutions are collaboration systems that enable distributed sales teams to work together, manage complex supply-chain issues... newsfactor.com »

Hilton, USA Today Give Guests New Content Choices

News-hungry travelers will start noticing a new perk in Hilton hotels this summer when they use their laptop, iPad or other devices to go online. Hilton Worldwide and USA Today announced Tuesday that they've agreed to a multiyear deal to give Hilton customers 24-hour-a-day Internet access to news and local information from Gannett publications, including USA Today, as well as entertainment, books, magazines, games and other content. Travelers staying in Hilton, Conrad, Embassy Suites and other Hilton-brand hotels will begin to see the new portal offerings this summer. The full rollout will happen this fall. They also will continue to have a choice of picking up a printed USA Today. Hilton's most frequent customers, top members of the 30 million-member Hilton HHonors loyalty program, will receive exclusive access to online entertainment. Hilton says the partnership with USA Today will help hotels better accommodate travelers, who increasingly get news, information and entertainment on mobile devices. "What we're doing is following guest trends and taking their cue in terms of what they want and how they want to see it," said Jim Holthouser, Hilton Worldwide's global head of full-service brands. Guests will be able to access the electronic newspaper without having to pay the Wi-Fi fee that Hilton's full-service hotels typically charge, Holthouser said. "If you choose to get the electronic version (of USA Today), you can on any personal device in the hotel and get it free," he said. Travelers can expect to find content that focuses on three areas: regional, national and international news; local information, including reviews of local restaurants and attractions; and entertainment, such as magazines and games. The new portal alone probably won't persuade guests to stay with Hilton vs. a rival, said independent travel industry analyst Henry Harteveldt of Atmosphere Research Group. But, he said, "it's a nice thing to have" if a guest wants to... newsfactor.com »
