IBM isn't wasting any time getting into acquisition mode in 2012. Big Blue just announced an agreement to acquire a cloud software quality and testing solutions company. IBM is snapping up Green Hat for an undisclosed amount. Simply stated, Green Hat helps its customers improve the quality of software applications by enabling developers to leverage cloud computing technologies to conduct testing on a software application before it is delivered. IBM had a good reason to acquire Green Hat, namely demand. According to the National Institute for Standards and Technology, software testing represents more than 50 percent of overall development costs. And testing teams often spend upward of 30 percent of their time managing the complexity of the test environment. Modern App Testing Green Hat curbs those costs by creating a virtual environment that simulates a wide range of IT infrastructure elements, without the constraints of hardware or software services. IBM said the continuous environment empowers developers and quality professionals to test software earlier and more frequently throughout the software development lifecycle. In the past, a development team had to construct an actual testing lab with both hardware and software to run simulation testing on a software program. That was a time consuming and labor intensive process. But when you add to that today's shorter development cycles, especially in markets like smartphones and tablets, the complexity is compounded. Green Hat's solutions lets developers set up a virtual test environment in minutes vs. weeks and at a fraction of the cost. Tests show that even the modified plans of the company LightSquared to start up a national high-speed wireless broadband network would cause harmful interference with GPS signals, federal officials said in a letter released Friday. "There appear to be no practical solutions or mitigations that would permit the LightSquared broadband service, as proposed, to operate in the next few years months or years without significant interference with GPS," officials said in a letter to the Commerce Department. They recommended no further testing. The letter was signed by Deputy Defense Secretary Ashton Carter and Deputy Transportation Secretary John Porcari, and released by the Federal Aviation Administration. The conclusion was based on an analysis of testing by a panel of experts on behalf of nine government departments and agencies. Their determination that LightSquared's plan can't be saved without dangerous interference with GPS could be a severe blow to the company's hopes to begin commercial service. LightSquared accused the panel of bias and urged the Federal Communications Commission, which has jurisdiction over use of the electromagnetic spectrum, to retake control of the testing. The expert panel has "deep ties with the same GPS manufacturers who have sold poorly designed equipment to America's farmers, public safety officials, military and government agencies," the company said in a statement. The statement said the panel didn't adequately investigate the impact of filtering technology on potential interference with precision GOP devices. "The devices selected as part of the most recent round of testing include numerous obsolete and off-market GPS receivers that nearly guaranteed failure," the statement said. A company planning a high-speed wireless service, with coverage for as many as 260 million U.S. customers, is charging that a governmental test of possible GPS interference from its transmissions was "rigged." On Wednesday, Reston, Va.-based LightSquared said in a statement that the test, conducted by the Space-Based Positioning, Navigation, and Timing Executive Committee (PNT EXCOM), was manipulated by "manufacturers of GPS receivers and government end users to produce bogus results." LightSquared is looking to provide what it describes as the first wholesale-only integrated wireless broadband and satellite network in the U.S. The company asked the National Telecommunication and Information Administration (NTIA), which oversaw the testing, to "objectively re-evaluate" the results, and to evaluate proposals the company has offered to mitigate interference. Taking another step in the bold journey into electronic hardware that began with branded smartphones, search giant Google is working on a home entertainment device that will initially stream music throughout homes and later other media, reports say. Google filed an application with the Federal Communications Commission last week for testing the new device, the Times said. In the Prototyping Phase "Google is developing an entertainment device that requires testing outside the laboratory environment," reads the application. "The device is in the prototyping phase and will be modified prior to final compliance testing." The testing, to continue through July, would measure "throughput and stability of home Wi-Fi networks using an entertainment device. Testing will include functional testing of all subsystems, including Wi-Fi and Bluetooth radio. Users will connect their device to home Wi-Fi networks and use Bluetooth to connect to other home electronics equipment. Мутационное тестирование — альтернативный подход к измерению качества ваших тестов. Вместо того, чтобы считать банальный code coverage, используется более разумный механизм. В байт-код ваших классов внедряются случайные изменения, иначе называемые мутациями. Если после такой мутации не упал ни один тест, который покрывает внесённые изменения, то велика вероятность того, что с тестами у вас не особо-то и хорошо. Пример возможной мутации: Было: if(somevalue < threshold) { doSomething(); } Стало: if(somevalue >= threshold) { doSomething(); } Изменение довольно критичное, потому тест, покрывающий этот блок кода, наверняка должен упасть.
