Predictions: The Top Tech Duds for 2012

This year we'll see new video game machines, a new version of Windows and maybe even an Apple-branded television. But don't get your hopes up too high. My prediction is that those and several other eagerly anticipated tech products will prove disappointing. Here's my forecast for some of the top tech duds for the year: Windows 8 Will Be the Next Vista The conventional wisdom about Microsoft's Windows operating system is that every other version is a winner, but the ones in between you generally want to avoid. Those latter versions usually introduce a major change in the way the operating system works or looks, while the others typically refine those changes and fix all the random bugs and problems they introduce. That dynamic seems almost certain to play out again this year -- in spades -- when the company releases Windows 8, the successor to the popular Windows 7. The new version drastically changes the look-and-feel of Windows. With it, Microsoft is also pushing a big change in how developers write applications. And the software is being designed to run on both tablets and PCs, which is likely to result in a Frankenstein monster that works well on neither. Look for companies and even consumers to hold out for Windows 9. New Game Machines Generate Little Buzz Time was when the world would be abuzz at the prospect of a new game machine -- much less two. But those days have passed. This year, Sony and Nintendo will debut the PlayStation Vita and the Wii U, respectively. My bet: The world will yawn. Sales of Nintendo's 3DS handheld -- the last new game device to hit store shelves -- were so disappointing that the company cut the price within six months. And reports out of Japan indicate that after an initial flurry, sales of the Vita, which hit... newsfactor.com »

Tech World Goes Soft at the Consumer Electronics Show

One of the biggest events in the technology world's annual cycle is set to kick off early next week in Las Vegas when 140,000 people and 2,700 exhibitors descend on the gambling mecca for the Consumer Electronics Show. The Internet age and the globalization of the technology market has put a dent in the importance of such confabs, and many of the world's most prominent companies no longer regard their official attendance as essential. Apple Inc. has long shunned the show, while even Consumer Electronics Show (CES) mainstay Microsoft Corp. is pulling the plug after this year's extravaganza. Nevertheless the world's largest tech show still remains a great periscope for spotting the trends and gadgets that will make headlines, and holes in your bank accounts, in the coming year. The roster of attendees is the largest since 2007, and while they will be subjected to all the razzle, dazzle and hype that marketing departments can dream up, they are unlikely to witness any ground-shaking product innovations that will rock their world. That's because the show will be less about shiny new toys than the discreet software that's inside them, says Andrew Nusca, the editor of tech site ZDNet.com. "Make no mistake, there will be newer, thinner, brighter televisions; higher-powered laptops and digital cameras. But that's not really where the action is," he said. "The real action can be found around the interoperability of these products. The real innovation will only be seen when the device is turned on and used. It can't be touched, only experienced." Microsoft will, as usual, hold the opening keynote speech, where chief executive Steve Ballmer will likely reveal more details about Windows 8 and his plans to claw back domination of the tech world from Apple, Facebook Inc and Google Inc. While Microsoft may never be sexy, it's still enormously influential, and is... newsfactor.com »

What Will Have the Tech World Abuzz in 2012?

To a tech columnist, the new year is the time to pack a suitcase for Las Vegas and dust off the crystal ball and take a stab at what's on the horizon. Vegas is where the tech biz congregates for the annual International Consumer Electronics Show, a showcase for the latest innovations in smart televisions, tablets, digital cameras and a whole lot more. But not everything is revealed at CES. Apple never attends in any official capacity, though its activities from afar have been known to overshadow the Vegas proceedings. The 2007 introduction of the iPhone took place during CES, just not at CES. At this year's show and well beyond, I expect that we'll see a continuation of major trends that took significant leaps in 2011: consumers growing comfortable with cloud-based services, voice controls and gesture-driven interfaces, fast 4G mobile networks, mobile payment options, Ultrabook computers. You'll probably also see further innovation in such technologies as glasses-free 3-D and augmented reality, though I'm not counting on either making a huge splash in 2012. Here is what you can expect: Windows 8 Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, a regular at CES, will be addressing the throngs again, though for one final time. Microsoft has announced that this is its last CES. I'm not expecting much new from Ballmer regarding the company's ubiquitous operating system. That said, Windows 8 is coming in 2012, with a "beta" promised in February, and the first full versions likely hitting later in the year. Windows 8 should make things very interesting, and not just for what we think of as traditional keyboard/mouse-based personal computers but for touch-capable tablets as well. The Web is already abuzz over reports that the Taiwanese computer maker Asus plans to bring out a convertible Windows 8 machine that swivels from an Ultrabook to a tablet. Next-Gen Video Game... newsfactor.com »

Immigration Chief Seeks To Reassure Silicon Valley

The Obama administration's top immigration official said Wednesday he wants to keep more foreign-born high-tech entrepreneurs in the U.S. But to make that happen, he said he needs those entrepreneurs to turn their creativity to immigration itself. Members of Silicon Valley's startup community met with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service Director Alejandro Mayorkas for what the agency billed as a summit to officially launch its unusual "Entrepreneurs in Residence" program. The event held on the campus of the NASA Ames Research Center sought to address a common tech industry complaint: Non-citizens who come to the U.S. to study end up starting companies in their home countries because they say the immigration process has become too daunting. With its new program, Mayorkas said the immigration service hopes to become more responsive to the fast-changing needs of tech startups. He said the agency would ultimately choose five applicants from the private sector to guide policy and training for officials who make decisions on individual immigration applications. The goal, Mayorkas said, is to keep the agency from applying traditional formulas to the unorthodox business models common on the startup scene. "To fail to do so is to fail to capture the lost potential to create jobs for U.S. workers when the need for those jobs is most acute," he said. One questioner, Scottish entrepreneur Scott Allison, said he came to Silicon Valley to start his company, an online human resources software service called Teamly. He said immigration piled one more uncertainty on top of the many difficulties startups face. "The immigration process shouldn't be something we have to worry about," Allison told Mayorkas. "But we do have to worry about it. I don't know where my home is." The Obama administration has pushed for more liberal policies to keep foreign-born engineers and scientists in the U.S. In this year's State of... newsfactor.com »

High-Tech Firms Grapple with Rising Costs in China

The price to make Silicon Valley gadgets and computers in China -- the assembly line for the global tech industry -- is going up, forcing tech companies to rejigger supply chains to contain costs and to consider charging more for electronic devices. With millions of Americans out of work, some hope the soaring salaries and other rising costs across the Pacific will trigger a renaissance in low-cost manufacturing in the United States. That is not expected to happen any time soon, experts say. But there is mounting concern among tech executives in the fiercely competitive gadget and PC markets. "Costs are rising across the board," said Sung Won Sohn, an economics professor at California State University-Channel Islands. Prices of imports from China rose 3.6 percent in 2011, the highest uptick on record, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. "This is a long-term shift, and it's going to continue," said Shaun Rein, managing director of Shanghai-based China Market Research Group, who just published a new book, "The End of Cheap China." "Last year, 21 of China's 31 provinces increased the minimum wage on average 22 percent," he said. "Americans will have to pay more when they shop at Best Buy, or companies like HP will have to squeeze margins and become less profitable. So what's happening is companies are trying to change their supply chain." Foxconn Technology Group, which assembles iPads, Hewlett-Packard laptops and many other devices in China, recently announced wage increases of as much as 25 percent for its workers. That will raise the monthly salary of many workers to about $400, not including overtime. It was the third pay increase since 2010, though assembly-line workers in China still make a fraction of the $2,200 a month typically paid for similar work in the United States. The pay increases in China came as the... newsfactor.com »
