Company executives told reporters in the Mideast commercial hub Dubai that as part of the expansion plan, they intend to recruit more than 500 new employees, in addition to the roughly 300 in the region now.
"The house is in order," Chief Financial Officer Werner Brandt said of the company's regional operations. "(There are) good growth rates already. Now we'll accelerate this."
SAP is one of the world's biggest business software makers. It develops applications such as those used for payroll and for managing relationships with customers and suppliers, as well as mobile and data-analysis software.
The Walldorf, Germany-based company has operated in the Middle East since 2007, following its acquisition of a local distributor.
Its Mideast expansion plans call for several new offices and increased Arabic-language and country-specific offerings. It also intends to set up a regional training and development institute to certify 2,000 new computer consultants -- IT professionals trained to work with SAP customers.
Sam Alkharrat, the company's managing director for the region, said the past year's Arab Spring uprisings had little direct effect on SAP's business.
"What we do see, however, is it did affect the sentiment across the region," prompting some customers to delay projects or expansion plans, he said.
Further down the road, he predicted the unrest could benefit business software makers such as SAP that supply both companies and governments.
"In the mid to long term, we believe ... governments are going to drive for higher levels of transparency, which means they're going to deploy better systems," Alkharrat said. newsfactor.com » | | 393 | A federal judge has ordered Oracle Corp. and Google Inc. to prepare for trial next month in a high-stakes lawsuit over claims that Google infringed on Oracle's intellectual property by using Java programming tools to create the popular Android mobile software.
The order came after several court rulings and concessions that narrowed the claims Oracle originally leveled in a 2010 lawsuit. But experts say the dispute could still have far-reaching effect on the burgeoning mobile computing industry.
Google's Android software is the world's most popular operating system for smartphones and other mobile devices. If Oracle prevails, Google could be forced to change disputed elements of the Android software and potentially pay damages amounting to hundreds of millions of dollars.
An Oracle expert initially estimated damages could exceed $6 billion. But U.S. District Judge William Alsup sided with Google on several motions that argued Oracle's calculations were based on poor methodology, including the expert's most recent estimate of $1 billion.
The San Francisco-based judge has taken the unusual step of appointing an independent expert to come up with his own damage estimates for a jury to consider.
Alsup's rulings, however, could make it more likely for the two companies to negotiate a last-minute settlement before the trial's scheduled start on April 16, according to Florian Mueller, a software patent consultant and blogger who has followed the dispute closely.
"With Oracle's case having been narrowed during the course of this litigation, a settlement is now more likely than last fall," when a magistrate ordered Google CEO Larry Page and Oracle CEO Larry Ellison to meet in person for settlement talks, Mueller said Tuesday.
Page and Ellison met for several hours last September at the San Jose federal courthouse, along with attorneys and aides, without resolving the dispute. Google's strategy -- to develop the same operating system software that every phone and tablet maker could share and create a uniform experience for users -- has largely worked.
Android is quickly becoming one of the most popular operating systems, embraced by some of the largest smartphone makers worldwide.
Samsung, Motorola and HTC, among others, have embraced the Linux-based software for their phones, customizing it a little, adding a few apps and offering competition to the popular iPhone.
But with so many cooks in the kitchen, Android was bound to run into communication hiccups stemming from inevitable changes and upgrades by wireless carriers and manufacturers.
Google, which developed Android, released the latest version late last year, somewhat whimsically called Ice Cream Sandwich. (Google names all Android versions after desserts.)
"What plagues the Android ecosystem is the lack of consistency," says Richard Shim of NPD Group's DisplaySearch. "That spells consumer experience that is less than ideal. It's difficult to navigate, and frankly, (something) consumers shouldn't have to deal with."
If you're an Android novice, here are some questions to ponder as you look to update your phone.
Q: What version of the Android operating system is on my phone?
A: If your phone is less than 2 years old, chances are that it's running on an OS called Gingerbread, which was introduced in late 2010. Google says about 60% of Android phones are using Gingerbread.
A much smaller percentage of users also has Froyo or Eclair phones, the versions that preceded Gingerbread.
Less than 2% of the phones currently used run on Android 4.0, also known as Ice Cream Sandwich.
Q: Do Android tablets run on the same... newsfactor.com » | | 396 | Oracle's latest quarterly earnings should provide a peek at just how confident companies have become in the economy by their willingness to spend money on new technology.
WHAT TO WATCH FOR: The report, due out after the stock market closes Tuesday, covers Oracle's fiscal third quarter -- a period spanning December through February. That coincided with the biggest three-month hiring spurt in the U.S. during the past two years. The trend could signal companies aren't as worried about the threat of another recession, encouraging them to increase spending in other areas.
That would be good news for Oracle Corp, which sells software and computer hardware to large companies and government agencies throughout the world.
Oracle stumbled in the quarter the ended in November, largely because several prospective customers decided to delay their purchases. The skittishness raised fears that companies were clamping down on their budgets as government debt problems in Europe threatened to topple a still-fragile economy.
Now that it looks like the economy is in better shape than it was three months ago, analysts and investors will be looking for any signs of other problems that could undercut Oracle's earnings growth. The concerns that Oracle could be grappling with issues that extend beyond the economy have grown since other business technology vendors such as IBM Corp., VMware Inc. and EMC Corp., has posted solid results for their most recent quarters.
Oracle is facing tougher competition from longtime rival SAP, as well as from feisty upstarts such as Salesforce.com Inc. and Workday that are changing the way that companies buy and use software. Salesforce and Workday are among a crop of software makers that offer applications as a subscription service that can be accessed on any device with an Internet connection. The new software targets C-suite decision makers who need to make high priority decisions.
IBM helps these execs tap into Big Data to manage financial operations, decrease fraud and nurture customer relationships.
Big Blue is drawing from its experience with more than 20,000 analytics engagements, as well as IBM Research innovations and predictive technologies from dozens of companies it has acquired, to offer the service and software -- and the company is on the cusp of an opportunity.
IDC estimates enterprises will invest more than $120 billion by 2015 to capture the business impact of analytics, across hardware, software and services. IBM has itself expanded its multibillion-dollar investment in business analytics to address three issues it sees as vital: fraud detection, financial operations and customer service.
A Three-Pronged Approach
As IBM sees it, enterprises across all industries are under increased pressure to extract new insights from the explosion of available data. Bridget van Kralingen, senior vice president at IBM Global Business Services, said the "new capabilities target the agendas of global business leaders operating in a world of accelerating complexity, unpredictability and massively available information."
The FBI reports health care fraud tops $250 billion a year -- and tax fraud costs billions more. IBM's Smarter Analytics Signature anti-fraud, waste and abuse solution embeds advanced algorithms directly into business processes, providing government agencies and insurers with the ability to detect fraud in real time -- before funds are paid out.
IBM's software also aims to help organizations gain a comprehensive view of a customer, derived from traditional enterprise data and customer sentiment gleaned from social networks, logged customer service interactions and Web click-stream data. Earlier this week, the software giant confirmed at its Business Solutions Convergence Conference in Houston that its Dynamics enterprise resource planning products would evolve into online versions.
The products include GP, NAV, and AX in the 2013 versions. Small- and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) tend to be big cloud users, at least in part because of the lower IT maintenance costs. "Budgetary and IT maintenance issues have kept" SMBs away from ERP solutions, noted Pund-IT's Charles King. But, he added, cloud-based apps are "a model that are valuable to both SMBs and larger enterprises, so everybody wins."
Everybody, Except...
Everybody, that is, except possibly the channel partners that Microsoft has developed over the years to deliver its premise-based software. King said Microsoft has indicated they would involve the channel partners in some fashion, although the particulars are undefined.
The software giant intends for the same ERP apps to be available for on-premises deployment, or utilization from either a private cloud or an Azure public cloud. It will also allow companies to use the apps in a mixed-mode approach, with some functions on premises, and others in the cloud.
Even though updates in the cloud are theoretically seamless to the user and the IT department, in practice frequent updates can mean functionality or user interaction changes. In order to make the ramp-up after updates a bit less steep, Microsoft is saying users will have up to a year to determine when they transition to the newest versions.
ERP in the cloud has become quite common, including offerings by Oracle, Fusion, Salesforce, NetSuite, Workday -- and even SAP, which emphasizes its on-premises approach.

On Monday, the Rockville, Md.-based company announced the availability of its motion control technology, called Freespace, for OEMs of Android and Windows 8 mobile devices.
The company said that its Freespace MotionEngine for Mobile, an embedded software solution, "manages and enhances" the performance of accelerometers, magnetometers, and gyroscopes currently found in mobile products and used for motion-based applications.
Golf Club, In-Air Mouse
Applications include enhanced navigational control, such as adjusting the volume of a phone by tilting it to the left or right. A smartphone using MotionEngine, the company said, could be swung like a golf club to play a virtual game, or used as an in-air mouse to control the cursor and game action on smart TVs.
More advanced applications can be developed using head-mounted peripherals and augmented-reality applications, Hillcrest said. GPS sensing can be enhanced so that, for instance, a smartphone would know when a user was walking by a certain store and could show a coupon or special offer for that retailer.
Safety applications could include a smartphone sensing a car accident or a bad fall, followed by a beeping query to the user and an emergency call sent out if the user does not respond.
Chad Lucien, Hillcrest's senior vice president of sales and marketing, said in a statement that, while motion sensors are now standard in mobile devices, "today's motion software implementations impose significant restraints that limit sensor choice, integration flexibility and performance." He added that his company aims "to change that."
'Essential Patent Portfolio'
The company said that its static and dynamic calibration processes offer the "industry's highest motion-processing performance," and its software works with a wide range of sensors.

The Neat Company of Philadelphia offers a NeatReceipts portable scanner and software system that enable you to scan those taxi, restaurant and hotel receipts, as well as business cards and other documents, and then organize them for company expense reports, taxes or just archival purposes.
And, with the April 17 federal tax deadline approaching, this is an optimal time to consider an electronic way to better handle the reams of paper receipts and related documents for tax-filing purposes and throughout the year.
The portable scanner weighs less than a pound, easily fits into most laptop cases and hooks up to your computer with a USB connection. It retails for about $200, which seems a bit pricey, and comes bundled with the software.
The software lets you organize the receipts and drag them into folders on your desktop. It lets you easily view, categorize and edit your notations about the receipts. And it lets you save the items, convert them into PDFs, run customized reports, e-mail them and export them into Quicken.
You also can feed business cards into the scanner and sync the particulars with Outlook, Plaxo or Mac Address Book.
I found the scanner and software fairly easy to use, although there were glitches. I tried the scanner and software at home, but could easily see breaking out the scanner in a hotel room and quickly feeding the day's receipts and business cards into it. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
The management and software capabilities of the ClearAccess 2.4 platform will become part of Cisco's network management software portfolio, which is known as Cisco Prime.
"We acquired ClearAccess to enable service providers to better manage the multitude of connected devices," a Cisco spokesperson said Wednesday. "Mobile is part of that equation, but not the entire story."
"ClearAccess provides a critical technology that will advance Cisco's mission to offer service providers a complete set of tools to manage their networks, within the home and across any connected device, amid the ongoing proliferation in network traffic," said Cisco Systems Vice President Jamie Lerner.
ClearAccess' technology is expected to help Cisco Systems to accelerate the company's development of software architectural advancements in the areas of mobility, cloud and managed devices, and video.
Reducing Mobile Traffic
One acquisition aim is to offer broadband service providers a complete set of tools for managing the connected home -- including monitoring and managing bandwidth usage, parental controls, diagnostics and analytics. Another goal is to help mobile network operators reduce data traffic congestion.
ClearAccess' software technologies are expected to complement Cisco's Videoscape architecture for mobile devices, which is designed to help service providers deliver the video resolution and frame rate that best matches the particular mobile device destined to receive it.
"By reducing the traffic at the edge, it helps to relieve some of the congestion going through the network," said Cisco SP Mobility Marketing Manager Jim O'Leary.
For service providers, the traffic reduction capabilities of mobile management architectures such as Videoscape will grow even more important over the next few years. Sales growth has slowed to a crawl. And consumers and developers are increasingly turning their time and attention to smartphones and tablets.
Pressured by that trend, Microsoft is updating Windows to make PCs work more like smartphones and to bring Windows to a whole new class of devices: iPad-like touch-screen tablets. Last month, the company launched what it calls a "consumer preview" of Windows 8, the next version of its flagship operating system. The preview is not a final version -- that isn't expected until at least this fall -- but it's close.
I've been playing around with the Windows 8 preview for several weeks. I loaded it onto a several-year old Dell laptop, in part because that's what I had available and in part to see what users of traditional PCs can expect from the new software. I hope to eventually test out the software on a tablet.
My conclusion: For PC users, Windows 8 is a major misstep.
Perhaps its biggest problem is that it has two separate and largely incompatible parts. It feels like Microsoft took a nice dress and attached it to an equally fine pantsuit and tried to pass it off as one garment. It just doesn't work.
The two pieces are a new interface called "Metro" and the old, traditional desktop inherited from past versions of the software.
The desktop interface looks and works much as it did in Windows 7, except that you won't find a Start button or Start menu, both of which have been core features of the software since Windows 95 debuted about 17 years ago. And you no longer see the desktop when you start up Windows.
Instead, you see the new Metro interface, which Microsoft developed originally for its Windows Phone 7 smartphone operating system. That means the two companies, like Apple, have hit on a winning formula of making a low-cost device with superior features, using cheap components and great software. Nokia's Lumia 900 has been well-received by critics, especially for its 4.3-inch, 800x480 pixels Super AMOLED Plus capacitive ClearBlack touchscreen that doesn't fade in sunlight.
Three-Way Partnership
iSuppli's report notes that Nokia, Microsoft and Qualcomm, which makes the Lumia 900's chips, worked in close coordination to make sure hardware and software were optimized for each other.
"One of Apple's advantages over Android has been the company's complete control of both the hardware and operating system software, helping it to produce efficient and economical iPhone design," said Andrew Rassweiler, senior principal analyst for teardown services at IHS, in a statement about the report.
"For the Lumia 900, Nokia and Microsoft worked in close partnership with Qualcomm to develop and optimize the software stack in order to take full advantage of the hardware. But while Apple capitalizes on its low hardware costs to attain industry-leading margins, Nokia is using this approach to offer an inexpensive phone intended to compete on the basis of price."
The state-of-the-art device, launched with great fanfare last week, costs $450 if purchased unlocked, but AT&T sells it for a bargain $99. With a manufacturer's rebate, the cost could be free.
iSuppli cautions that the preliminary analysis does not factor in licensing fees for software, royalties and other costs.

The Toronto-based company, which provides analytics software for compensation and sales performance management, has 180 clients in the banking, insurance, retailing, IT and telecommunications sectors.
IBM recently announced the introduction of new Smarter Analytics offerings for addressing the emerging Big Data opportunities with respect to managing financial operations as well as decreasing fraud and nurturing next-generation customer relationships. Once IBM's Varicent deal closes, Big Blue expects to further advance its business analytics market leadership through the introduction of even more capabilities.
"The goal and aim of the addition of Varicent's sales performance management software will be to integrate it into our BA portfolio and existing offerings," an IBM spokesperson said Friday. "It is a nice complement to our existing performance management portfolio."
The Varicent acquisition -- combined with IBM's prior acquisitions in business analytics including Algorithmics, Clarity Systems, OpenPages and Cognos, and recent investments in predictive analytics such as SPSS -- is expected to provide IBM's clients with an even broader range of business analytics offerings.
However, it remains unclear exactly how IBM will be integrating the mix of technologies it has already acquired with Varicent's single management system, which is driven by a sophisticated calculation engine that models and analyzes the effectiveness of incentive spending.
"Since we just announced the definitive agreement to acquire Varicent, full details of the integration will not be disclosed at this time as they are still being worked out," IBM's spokesperson said.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
ClearAccess provides software to service providers for the provisioning and management of residential and mobile devices. Cisco picked up the software and the talent, which is being integrated into the Cisco Network Management Technology Group.
As Cisco sees it, service providers are faced with growing network complexity, exploding video and data traffic, and an increasing number of devices connected to their networks. With the proliferation of these devices, Cisco has noticed a clear trend: Service providers are looking for ways to immediately lower operating expense while delivering and enabling new services.
Beefing Up Cisco Prime
Jamie Lerner, vice president and general manager of Cisco Network Management Technology Group's Service Provider Applications division, said the ClearAccess acquisition will accelerate Cisco's software architectural advancements in mobility, cloud and managed devices, and video.

There will be no separate brand for Microsoft customers to think about or a separate service for them to install, said Windows Live Group Vice President Chris Jones. "It is all included when you turn on your PC for the first time," Jones wrote in a blog post Wednesday.
The brand makeover is a requisite component of Microsoft's strategy for enabling its cloud-based services to run seamlessly on next-generation PCs running Windows 8 as well as mobile handsets empowered by the latest version of Windows Phone.
"When you connect a device or service to your Microsoft account, you're automatically provisioned with a set of cloud services -- including a contact list, calendar, inbox, instant messaging, and cloud storage," Jones said.
We asked Al Hilwa, director of applications software development at IDC, for his views on Microsoft's cloud strategy.
"Microsoft is trying to forge a large online user ecosystem out of its PC franchise, Hilwa said Thursday. The trick is to learn from these problems and either fix the computer before the worst happens, or at least make sure it never happens again.
This is not work that can only be performed by experts. Even a blue screen can be helpful, since Windows uses it to deliver a Bug Check Code, which gives some hint about the cause of the problem.
Thus, the message KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED indicates a problem with a driver. Microsoft provides a complete list of all check codes -- and possible solutions -- online. Such tips are necessary; otherwise any effort to fix a computer can quickly turn into a waste of time.
"Unfortunately, the diagnosis is anything but easy," says Hans Ludwig Stahl, director of the Institute for Computer Science at the Cologne University of Applied Sciences. Problems can stem from issues with either hardware or software. Or the PC could be having resource issues related to working memory or hard drive space.
Viruses and other forms of malware can also make the computer unusable, which is why everyone should have up-to-date anti-virus software.
Stahl recommends seeking the source of the problem in the recent past. "Maybe the problem cropped up right after putting in a new piece of hardware or installation of some new software." If that's the case, remove the potential source of the problem as a test. Maybe the computer will work fine without it.
