Cell-Phone Cancer Warning Met with a Shrug

News last week that an arm of the World Health Organization said cell phones might raise the risk of brain cancer has been greeted by Americans mostly with a shrug of the shoulder -- one that's pinning a cell phone to the ear. Google searches for "cancer" and "cell phones" spiked this week. And some people vowed to get headsets to shield themselves from radiation. But most seemed to either dismiss the warning as too vague, or reason that if the most useful device in modern life poses a slight health risk, then so be it. "I was watching the news about it, and I thought, `I'm already screwed because I've been talking on the phone for seven years,'" said Genevieve Chamorro, a 31-year-old New Yorker who was shopping for a phone. John Gottani, a manager at a cell phone store in New York, said he's been selling phones for six years and has never heard anyone ask if they cause cancer. The only things customers really care about, Gottani said, are "if it works, and if it texts." The International Agency for Research on Cancer reviewed dozens of published studies on cell phones and cancer before classifying cell phones as "possibly carcinogenic" on Tuesday. It's a risk category that includes night-shift work, engine exhaust and coffee. Studies haven't been able to rule out a link between cell phones and cancer. But experts say that if there is a link, it's unlikely to be strong. Cell phones emit weak radio waves, which, under the conventional understanding of physics, can't wreak the same sort of cellular changes that sunlight and radioactivity can. A common tip offered to those who want to reduce their exposure to cell phone radiation is to use a headset. Even wireless Bluetooth headsets reduce radiation exposure. Though they emit radio signals of their... newsfactor.com »

New Airport System Scans Iris, Saves Passengers Time

Eye scanners and information chips inside passports may soon be coming to an airport near you as the airline industry seeks to sharply reduce security check-in time and inconvenience. The International Air Transport Association unveiled a mock-up Tuesday in Singapore of what it dubbed the "Checkpoint of the Future," where passengers separated by security risk would walk through one of three high-tech, 20-foot-long (6.1-meters-long) tunnels that can quickly scan shoes and carry-on luggage and check for liquids and explosives. "Passengers should be able to get from curb to boarding gate with dignity," IATA Director General Giovanni Bisignani said. "That means without stopping, stripping or unpacking, and certainly not groping." Airlines are seeking ways to win back passengers put off by long and irritating airport security measures who have opted to travel instead by train, boat or car. IATA said Monday it expects the industry's profit this year to plummet to $4 billion from $18 billion last year. U.S. Transportation Security Administration chief John Pistole said he thinks IATA's security system, which it hopes to implement within five years, is a great idea. "It's something that's long overdue," Pistole said at IATA's annual conference. "We're not at the checkpoint of the future yet but we're working toward that. I think eventually we will see something similar." The TSA has been working for the last six months on developing a system that could differentiate passengers by security risk to cut down on needless checks, Pistole said. "One size does not fit all," Pistole said. The TSA will likely start a pilot program this year in some airports that allows frequent flyers or other travelers with clean records to receive minimal checks, he said. In the IATA prototype, passengers would be categorized based on the results of a government risk assessment that is put into a chip in a passenger's passport or... newsfactor.com »

Wii U Goes Against Market Trend as Nintendo Gambles

Nintendo has taken the cover off the successor to its market-shaping Wii. The company introduced the Wii U at the E3 Expo, making it the first to demonstrate the next generation of video-game consoles. Though the Wii U has met with mixed reactions, Nintendo is hoping for another success with its latest console. Here's what you can expect: A controller with a 6.2-inch screen that promises to drive new gaming experiences and the ability to customize entertainment. To be sure, Nintendo is taking a different approach to gaming with the Wii U. Typically, video games played on a home console are confined to the TV. Each player in a multiplayer game has the same perspective. Nintendo is shaking up that paradigm by blending the experience of watching TV and playing games with the Wii U and its new controller. Investor reactions to the Wii U were not favorable, and Nintendo's stock dropped Wednesday in Tokyo after the Wii U's introduction. Nintendo's Huge Risk Nintendo demonstrated the possibilities at E3, including the controller's ability to display information on its screen that doesn't appear on the TV and shifting viewpoints based on the orientation of its gyroscope. "Nintendo is taking a huge risk here, both moving against the conventional wisdom of enhancing their motion interface and trying to embrace the tablet with a non-tablet product," said Rob Enderle, principal analyst at the Enderle Group. "I think this may be a bridge too far for them as games for twin screens won't port easily or at all to other systems, which creates a huge risk for the game developers. In the end they have come to market with a heavy expensive controller when the trend being driven by Microsoft and its Kinect is no controller at all. That is swimming upstream, which is vastly different than what they... newsfactor.com »

Читать дальше → habrahabr.ru »

Pro-SOPA Murdoch Embroiled in Twitter War

Rupert Murdoch is not happy that the White House has decided to oppose the Stop Online Piracy Act unless changes are made to protect freedom of expression. "So Obama has thrown in his lot with Silicon Valley paymasters who threaten all software creators with piracy, plain thievery," he tweeted on Saturday, and now a tweet war is in full progress. The Obama administration announced over the weekend that it would not support SOPA if it did not address threats to "an open and innovative" Internet. While SOPA is the name of one of the submitted bills, it has become shorthand for several pieces of proposed legislation, including the PROTECT IP Act and the Online Protection and Digital Enforcement Act. Administration Statement In a statement from U.S. Chief Technology Officer Aneesh Chopra, IP Coordinator at the Office of Management and Budget Victoria Espinel, and Cybersecurity Coordinator and Special Assistant to the President Howard Schmidt, the administration noted that "online piracy by foreign Web sites is a serious problem that requires a serious legislative response." However, the administration said that it "will not support legislation that reduces freedom of expression, increases cybersecurity risk, or undermines the dynamic, innovative global Internet." Any effort to combat online piracy, the statement continued, "must guard against the risk of online censorship of lawful activity." In particular, the administration said it opposed any effort to change the Domain Name System, given that "our analysis of the DNS filtering provisions in some proposed legislation suggests that they pose a real risk to cybersecurity and yet leave contraband goods and services accessible online." The statement follows a wave of opposition to SOPA by a variety of lawmakers, content creators and individuals, including Google, Yahoo and Facebook. 'Piracy Leader Is Google' Murdoch's News Corp. empire is well aware of the many sites that steal content, and... newsfactor.com »
