New Mobile Malware Attacks Focus on Android Devices

Android is now big enough to own some dubious distinctions. A new report indicates that Google's open-source platform has moved into third place as "the most attacked platform for mobile malware." If one counts the number of new malware attacks, Android takes first place, followed by Symbian and Java ME. The report from security firm McAfee said the malware targeted at Android devices increased 76 percent since the last quarter. It also noted several other malware milestones, including the first appearance of fake Mac antivirus software and a "significant" increase in rootkits. 'Record-Breaking Numbers' In spite of the fake Mac software, a direct result of Macs' increased popularity, McAfee said it expects fake antivirus software in general to decrease over time. At the rate of increase for malware, the firm said, there might be a record 75 million unique samples in its "zoo" collection by the end of this year, based on results so far. Vincent Wafer, senior vice president of McAfee Labs, said the year so far has seen "record-breaking numbers of malware, especially on mobile devices," and directly in proportion to the devices' increase in popularity. One of the most favored techniques is infecting apps so users download and spread the malware themselves. Other trends, he said, include attacks that are stealthier and more sophisticated, which could mean some attacks go unnoticed for a substantial period of time. Stealth attacks have increased more than 38 percent over last year. Acts of Cyberwar There's also been an increase in attacks by hacktivist groups, which intend to send a message, rather than seeking personal gain. McAfee noted that there were at least 20 such attacks globally in the second quarter alone, with most attributed to Lulz Security, known as LulzSec, and some to the Anonymous hacker groups. Anonymous' lesser activity is attributed to a split in... newsfactor.com »

iPhone 4S Sets Sales Record for Apple

Although the iPhone 4S launch was a disappointment to some Apple fans -- because it wasn't the iPhone 5 -- that doesn't seem to be hurting sales. On Monday, the company announced that its first day of pre-orders exceeded 1 million and smashed the record set by the previous model, the iPhone 4. The pre-orders started on Friday, and the device goes on sale at stores this Friday. The 4S adds a third U.S. carrier partner, Sprint Nextel, to the existing two carriers, AT&T and Verizon Wireless. Previous Record: 600,000 The iPhone 4's previous record was 600,000 orders in one day. Philip Schiller, senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing, said in a statement that "first day pre-orders for iPhone 4S have been the most for any new product Apple has ever launched." The new device offers iOS 5, the latest version of Apple's mobile operating system, with more than 200 new features. One of the most talked-out additions is iCloud, which allows users to automatically and wirelessly store their content on Apple's servers, and retrieve it on other devices. The 4S features an A5 dual-core processor that doubles the speed over the predecessor model, a battery life of up to eight hours for voice, a high-resolution retina display, and an eight-megapixel camera that permits 73 percent more light, 30 percent sharper images, better color accuracy, 1080p HD video, and has a new image-stabilization feature. It also features a voice-to-text software assistant called Siri for voice-activated commands. At the 4S launch last week, Apple executive Scott Forstall verbally asked the 4S to find a Greek restaurant in Palo Alto, and the app complied. Siri is available on the 4S but not yet on other iOS 5 devices. 'Not at All Surprised' Avi Greengart, an analyst with industry research firm Current Analysis, said he was "not at... newsfactor.com »

Security Researcher Says Carrier IQ Charges Contain 'Misinformation'

Even as government officials around the world are beginning to investigate the Carrier IQ software installed on millions of smartphones, a security researcher is saying that claims the company had been improperly collecting personal data are "erroneous." Dan Rosenberg of Virtual Security Research, who says he has no professional ties to Carrier IQ, wrote that the reaction to the software contains a lot of "misinformation." In a posting Monday on his security research blog, It's Bugs All the Way Down, Rosenberg said Carrier IQ "is a piece of software installed on phones that accepts pieces of information known as metrics." Some 'Important Conclusions' Rosenberg said that the software decides if a submitted metric is "interesting," based on the current profile on the device. The profile determines the relevance by assessing whether the information assesses a given aspect of phone service, such as reception or battery life. The software's determination of relevance also determines if the metric is sent to the carrier or not, in order to evaluate, say, dropped calls. After a detailed analysis of Carrier IQ on a Samsung Epic 4G Touch, Rosenberg wrote that he reached a "number of important conclusions." For one thing, he said, he found that the Carrier IQ software on the phone could not record textual content from SMS messages, Web pages, or e-mail, even if that carrier wanted the information, because there is no metric for it. He found that the software can record dialer buttons, and speculated that carriers already have legal access to that data. But, Rosenberg said, the Carrier IQ application on the Epic 4G Touch cannot record non-dialer keystrokes, such as inputting a text message. However, the software can record GPS location data "in some situations," and can record URLs that are visited. Although Carrier IQ is citing Rosenberg's investigation to support its position that... newsfactor.com »

T-Mobile Kill Fees Squash AT&T's Q4 Profits

In the battle between AT&T and Verizon, AT&T has topped its rival, albeit in an undesirable area. After Verizon posted a $2 billion fourth-quarter loss earlier this week, AT&T has followed up with a whopping $6.68 billion fourth-quarter loss. But AT&T expected the bad news after the failed T-Mobile acquisition. AT&T had to shell out $3 billion in cash-based kill fees and $1 billion worth of spectrum, as well as roaming fees, to the smaller carrier after the deal fell through. AT&T also took a hit on employee pension benefits. AT&T's monumental fourth-quarter loss compares with a $1.1 billion profit in the year ago period. "We knew these penalties were going to hit AT&T pretty hard. It's money that they can't use to build out their infrastructure, and they are undergoing one of the largest infrastructure change-outs in the company's history," said Rob Enderle, principal analyst at Enderle Group. "This will slow them down a bit because it will cut the resources they've got to improve services. Other than that, it is a one-time charge." CEO Cites Momentum That said, AT&T is hardly faltering. The telecommunications giant saw fourth-quarter revenues rise 3.6 percent to $32.5 billion, beating analyst expectations. AT&T posted record sales, strong wireless network performance and improved wireline revenue trends. Enderle said AT&T's financials don't show any major competitive threat that's doing damage - -the firm is fiscally strong. Much like Verizon, AT&T posted its best-ever smartphone sales quarter. AT&T smartphone sales were up 60 percent over the year-ago period. In fact, AT&T set a record with 9.4 million smartphones sold in the fourth quarter. That's nearly double the number sold in the third quarter and 50 percent more than the previous quarterly record. "We had a tremendous year in terms of execution, and we have excellent momentum across our growth platforms," said... newsfactor.com »

Would Optimism Be Higher if Apple Were a Dow Stock?

Right now, Apple mania is the feel-good story on Wall Street. But the "Apple Effect" would have been even greater had the keepers of the Dow Jones industrial average added the maker of the iPad and iPhone instead of Cisco Systems in June 2009 when it ousted then-struggling General Motors. The reason? Had Apple, now the planet's most valuable company, been added to the iconic stock index on June 8, 2009, the Dow would now be trading at a record 14,810.80, or 16% above Wednesday's close, according to a calculation by Bespoke Investment Group. But in reality, at 12,781 the Dow is 9.8% below its Oct. 9, 2007, record close of 14,164.53. Apple's meteoric rise -- including its first close above $500 a share earlier this week -- has some wondering what might have been. "We wonder if investor sentiment would be more positive if the Dow was trading at record levels," says Paul Hickey of Bespoke. The Dow is a price-weighted index, which means the higher the stock price the bigger its impact on the index's overall value. Apple has risen from $143 in June of 2009 to $497.67 now, so at its current price it would have carried great clout -- both up and down. Wednesday's 97-point Dow drop would have been 167 points with Apple stock's $11.79 slide. There is a line of thinking that during a period in which the mood of the investment community has been pessimistic, the psychology might have improved much sooner and created a positive feedback loop had the Dow been able to notch a record riding the coattails of Apple. Indeed, when it comes to an investor's psyche, new highs have a powerful effect on markets. They: Breed hope. "There's a psychological factor," Hickey says. "New highs make people more optimistic." Alter the national conversation. Fear has held... newsfactor.com »

Hospitals Try Voice Recognition for Health Records

If your doctor is talking to an iPad the next time you see her, she may actually be flipping through your file. Voice-recognition technology developers are introducing a slew of products aimed at getting doctors to document patient information more immediately and thoroughly. The technology has advanced far enough, its proponents say, that it can now do more than just passively receive doctors' input. Nuance, the maker of Dragon voice-recognition software, is marketing a new product that is embedded into a hospital's electronic medical record system. As doctors input a patient's information via voice, it can highlight and validate medical facts, spot inconsistencies and ask follow-up questions, says Nick Van Terheyden of Nuance. They can edit to ensure accuracy. M-Modal, a Nuance competitor, is working on a similar product that allows physicians to record information in real time on mobile devices as they consult with patients. "Physicians prefer to narrate and dictate. They don't want to point and click," says Juergen Fritsch, co-founder of M-Modal. The companies' push into health care, where accuracy is of utmost importance, is enabled by constant improvement in voice technology. Apple's introduction of Siri on iPhone has also raised the public's awareness of its potential. The federal government's call for hospitals to install electronic medical record systems has also stirred the industry's curiosity about the technology, says Mary Griskewicz of the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society. Doctors have used dictation for years as they compile patient care history and post-care summaries, orders and prescriptions. Many speak into recording devices and pay transcribers to type the notes. In recent years, they've moved on to software that transcribes directly as they dictate. But Nuance's technology -- in testing at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and a few other hospitals -- takes the process a step further, employing a mixture of data... newsfactor.com »

Internet Ad Revenue Hits Record $31 Billion

Revenue from Internet advertising in the U.S. hit a record $31 billion last year, according to a study released Wednesday. That's up 22 percent from $26 billion in 2010, the previous record. The Interactive Advertising Bureau, an industry group, conducted the quarterly study with PricewaterhouseCoopers. About half of the ad revenue, $14.8 billion, came from the search category. Those are the text-based ads that are sold by Google and others and that are targeted to search terms and other keywords. The fastest-growing category was mobile, with revenue of $1.6 billion in 2011, more than double the $600 million a year earlier. It's still a small part of overall Internet advertising, however. David Silverman, a partner with PricewaterhouseCoopers, said the growth in mobile should continue given its ability "to deliver timely, targeted, relevant and local advertisements in a manner that was not previously possible." According to the study, retail advertisers were the largest spenders, accounting for 22 percent, or $7.1 billion, of the total last year. Internet ad revenue in the final three months of 2011 totaled $9 billion, a 20 percent increase from the same period in 2010. That's also a record, beating the $7.8 billion in the third quarter of 2011. newsfactor.com »
