Google CEO Larry Page got grilled in a San Francisco courtroom on Wednesday and didn't budge an inch.
There is plenty at stake for Google if it loses, namely $1 billion and an ongoing royalty to Oracle to use the Android operating system. Android powers more than 300 million tablets and smartphones and Google has banked on the technology to help drive its mobile strategy forward.
While Oracle and Google duke it out in court, industry watchers are looking at the value of Java and why Oracle is pushing so hard to defend it. Oracle acquired the Java programming language when it bought Sun in 2010.
Java's Developer Advantage
We asked Scott Sellers, CEO of Silicon Valley-based Azul Systems -- the only company outside Oracle to optimize Java for the enterprise -- his take on the potential impacts the Oracle vs. Google suit could have on Java.
"Even though Apple does not use Java, a substantial if not the majority of cell phones use Java or Java-like languages, from BlackBerry to Android to Nokia's platform," Sellers told us. "Java is significant in mobile because it enables rapid development of applications across the world's broadest set of developers."
Sellers asked a pointed question: Why wouldn't a cell-phone manufacturer want to base their platform on the world's most popular and widely developed language? Since Java is the most secure and robust development environment, he said, developers and operators take comfort in knowing their mobile Java applications will have an exceptional end-user experience.
Google's Java-Like Mindset
Any time a new platform like Android is launched, the key attribute of success is whether enough developers will support the platform to drive "killer apps." Without killer apps, the platform... newsfactor.com » | | 154 | A German court ruled Friday that YouTube must install filters to prevent users uploading some music videos whose rights are held by a music-royalties collecting body.
Hamburg's state court sided with Germany's GEMA, which had sued Google Inc.'s YouTube unit over 12 temporarily uploaded music videos for which no licensing fees were paid. The organization represents about 60,000 German writers and musicians.
The online video platform has maintained that it bears no legal responsibility for the uploaded content -- saying it checks and sometimes blocks content when users alert the firm about alleged violations of laws.
YouTube currently offers copyright holders software that allows them to identify recordings for which they hold copyright, enabling them to flag the content as infringing their rights.
The Hamburg court ruled that once an alleged violation is flagged YouTube must now apply the software to the recording to prevent further copyright infringements.
The court also told YouTube to install a new program that filters uploaded videos for possible copyright infringements according to key words -- such as musicians' names and song titles -- to catch versions of a song that only sound somewhat different, such as live recordings.
"The platform operator only has the obligation to block the video ... and take appropriate measures to hinder further rights violations after being notified about the copyright violation," the court said. "There is no obligation to control all videos already uploaded to the platform," it added.
Kerstin Becker, a GEMA attorney, said the verdict is "a great success for GEMA" because it made clear that YouTube bears some legal responsibility for videos uploaded by its users, German news agency dapd reported.
But Google spokesman Kay Overbeck said the ruling was only a "partial success" as the court made it clear that YouTube is a platform hosting external content.
In its ruling, the court said it... newsfactor.com » | | 155 | Let the cloud wars begin. Following the launch of Google Drive on Tuesday and expanded offerings on Microsoft's SkyDrive on Monday, business-cloud platform and storage provider Box is releasing version 2 of its platform API, and unveiling new application and technology partners.
Fifteen more companies are now application partners for Box's OneCloud, and two entrepreneur support centers in New York City, General Assembly and TechStars, are joining up as well. Box has more than 10 million individual users worldwide, plus more than 120,000 businesses -- including 82 percent of the Fortune 500.
'A Radical Shift'
Box is emphasizing that it is focused on enterprises, while the new Google Drive is oriented toward consumers. Its OneCloud provides a suite of productivity apps, enabling content to be accessed, edited and shared securely from smartphones, tablets and other devices.
Box CEO Aaron Levie said in a statement that "the enterprise technology landscape is experiencing a radical shift toward universal, mobile information access and content sharing." He added that Box's OneCloud platform "sits at the center of this revolution," and has been widely adopted by third-party developers "who are building the next generation of enterprise software."
The new OneCloud API includes streamlined documentation and easier integration through RESTful standards. There's also an Instant Mode feature, making it easier for developers to seamlessly connect their apps to Box's services. Using Instant Mode, access to Box will be available by simply typing in an email address. The company said this means that LinkedIn, for instance, could offer Box storage, even if a given LinkedIn user has not joined Box.
Additionally, the new Box OneCloud App-to-App Framework offers documentation and user interface guidelines.
The new application partners are CloudOn, Breezy, Explain Everything, BlueBeamVu, Handshake, iAnnotate, iDesk, iDocShelf, InBound, LincDoc, Mockups.me, Notability, Producteev, ScrumPad Pro and The Vault. These have been the stuff of home automation dreams for years, but now Microsoft, hoping to move things along, is releasing new details on progress made by its HomeOS research project.
In a new video and white paper, the technology giant presents the platform, which treats virtually any electronic device in the home as a controllable peripheral. The research paper, An Operating System for the Home, mentions that the platform has been running as a prototype in a dozen homes for four to eight months, and that a variety of applications have been built by students and researchers.
'A Single Logical PC'
The idea of a connected home is not a new one, and dozens of companies and labs have discussed, developed, and proposed concepts and solutions in recent years. In 2010, for example, Microsoft released a white paper about HomeOS, along with a HomeStore for apps, drivers and drives. The newly released research paper and video describe the prototypes and applications that have been developed from that concept.
Home automation and control has not yet achieved critical mass because of such factors as technical complexity, a huge array of manufacturers for home devices, lack of standards, setup time, and cost. Microsoft's newest research attempts to address all of these issues.
Microsoft's proposed solution, as the paper states, is to create a platform where "all devices in the home appear as peripherals connected to a single logical PC," which could be a smartphone or tablet. The company said the HomeOS platform has been under development for more than two years. Microsoft has also had a prototype smart home in operation in Redmond, Wash., the company's headquarters, for some time.

Now, RIM is trumpeting success in attracting developers. But is it enough to turn the ailing smartphone maker around?
RIM execs are putting on a good show and have been working hard with app developers to make sure the next generation of BlackBerry devices have plenty of content and apps available at launch. RIM just released a developer toolkit in beta for BlackBerry 10 so developers can build and test their apps before new devices roll out later in 2012.
Martyn Mallick, vice president of global alliances and business development at RIM, said she hears from partners every day who want to start building apps for BlackBerry 10. RIM trotted out a handful of developers to support that point -- and even ventured into China with an app contest.
Massaging Developers
"RIM has got it right with the BlackBerry 10 platform. They have really streamlined the app-development process," said Adam Linford, Truphone head of labs and mobile applications. "The platform's support for open-source components flattens the learning curve, enabling us to build a new application quickly and cost-effectively and have it ready to go when the first BlackBerry 10 devices debut."
Gameloft is also on board. Ludovic Blondel, vice president of OEM at Gameloft, said the company already has 11 titles, including its popular physics-based puzzle game Shark Dash and more hard-core games such as N.O.V.A. 3: Near Orbit Vanguard Alliance being optimized for the platform.
"When evaluating the technical viability of a platform, we consider three areas: camera, sensors, and processing and graphics capabilities," said Jeffrey Powers, Occipital co-founder and CEO, makers of 360 Panorama, a panoramic photo app. "BlackBerry 10 met and often exceeded our expectations for each of these areas."
RIM is even working to encourage university... newsfactor.com » | | 158 | Businesses now have a choice of another collaboration platform. Citrix debuted this week its team-based collaboration platform, called Podio, which is based on technology obtained during the recent purchase of the cloud service by the same name.
The unveiling of Podio is accompanied by Citrix's announcements of new integrations with other productivity and collaboration services. These include Citrix's own GoToMeeting and Sharefile, Evernote, Google Drive, Microsoft SkyDrive and SugarSync. The intent, according to the company, is to create new solutions for distributed teams -- and especially mobile ones -- to work together in the era of the cloud.
'Natural Extension' of GoToMeeting
Citrix had already announced integrations with Box, Dropbox, and Google Docs, and said that the new enhancements mean that Podio supports all major cloud file and document sharing services, as well as several popular cloud-based business tools and services, including FreshBooks, Google Apps, Campaign Monitor and Zendesk.
Bernardo de Albergaria, Citrix vice president and general manager of Collaboration, said in a statement that the social power of the Podio collaboration platform makes it the first to provide "this type of integrated, cloud-based support for team-based collaboration."
The platform allows users to connect and create workspaces for their teams, get free apps from the hundreds of free ones available in the Podio App Market, and extend or otherwise modify apps. The company said the platform is a "natural extension" of its GoToMeeting and related products.
The enhancements for GoToMeeting include the ability to connect meetings to workflows in Podio, in order to manage meetings more productively. A Podio meeting app can also be structured to support particular meetings, such as providing required content for specific tasks.
Podio also provides an Application Programming Interface, or API, for companies and outside developers to integrate the platform with other services, and to build new tools and other apps on... newsfactor.com » | | 159 |

With its latest innovation, AMD is targeting users of mid- to high-end graphics-intensive applications like digital signage, casino gaming, point-of-sale systems and kiosks, as well as parallel-processing-intensive applications.
The Embedded R-Series APU combines AMD's new "Piledriver" CPU architecture with its DirectX 11-capable AMD Radeon HD 7000 Series graphics in a heterogeneous multicore embedded processing platform.
Buddy Broeker, director of AMD Embedded Solutions, said AMD developed the embedded APU to offer its customers a high-performance, power-efficient, small form-factor embedded processor.
"By leveraging its seamlessly integrated heterogeneous system architecture, developers can tap into a high-performance and efficient parallel processing engine to accelerate their graphics- and compute-intensive applications, all while using industry-standard libraries such as OpenCL and DirectCompute," Broeker said.
Under the Hood
When you lift up the hood, so to speak, on the Embedded R-Series APU, you'll find that it integrates dedicated resources that work to drive performance with shared resources while simultaneously reducing power consumption and die space.
Because of its scalability, AMD said, the new APU gives developers the flexibility to leverage the same board design and software stack for a variety of apps. The Embedded R-Series also integrates discrete-class graphics into the processor, which means apps that previously required a separate graphics processor or card now can be delivered on a wide range of form factors.
Devs working with the AMD Embedded R-Series APU can implement remote management, client virtualization and security capabilities. All this aims to help reduce deployment costs and increase security and reliability of their AMD R-Series based platform through AMD DAS 1.0, featuring DASH 1.1, AMD Virtualization and Trusted Platform Module 1.2 support.
