iPhone 4S, meet the Galaxy S III. Samsung's latest model in its Galaxy lineup was launched Wednesday, and comparisons are being made with Apple's popular smartphone. In fact, Samsung is trying to position the device as just a step beyond what's out there. In a statement accompanying the release, the company said the S III is a smartphone that "recognizes your voice, understands your intention," and maximizes sharing. New 4G LTE smartphones are taking center stage at CTIA Wireless 2012 this week in New Orleans, where AT&T and Verizon each unveiled plans for new handsets from Samsung and HTC on Monday. AT&T has 4G LTE networks up and running in 35 U.S. markets, with LTE going live in more metropolitan areas such as Salt Lake City and Austin, Texas later this year. Verizon has LTE networks available in 230 U.S. markets. HTC's Droid Incredible will become Verizon's 23rd smartphone with 4G LTE capability when it launches in the weeks ahead. U.S. consumers have had their fill of expensive, contract-based phone plans. Figures from T-Mobile USA on Thursday, added to earlier reports from other companies, indicate that the U.S. wireless industry lost subscribers from contract-based plans for the first time in the first quarter. Contract-based plans are the most lucrative ones for phone companies. The industry default over the past several decades, they account for the vast majority of revenue at the big phone companies. The seven largest U.S. phone companies, representing more than 95 percent of the market, lost a combined 52,000 subscribers from contract-based plans in the January to March period, according to a tally by the Associated Press. The companies have a combined 220 million devices on such plans, accounting for about two-thirds of the total number of devices. Since nearly every adult, and many children and teenagers, already have phones, there's little room for growth anymore. But subscribers are also flowing to cheaper, no-contract plans, which showed an increase of at least 2 million. That figure, however, is down from more than 5 million in the same quarter a year ago. The industry is also adding millions of non-phone devices, like smart energy meters. These so-called "machine-to-machine" connections usually carry very low monthly fees, on the order of a few dollars per month. For example, AT&T subscribers on contract-based plans pay an average of $64.46 per month, while other AT&T customers pay an average of $11.52 per month. Nokia Lumia users in Europe can now download e-books from a dedicated hub for the Windows Phone 7 device, raising the question of whether people are ready to read books on the small screen of their smartphones. Users of the Nokia Lumia 800, 710, 610 and the new 900, which was released last month to strong reviews as the flagship of Nokia and Microsoft's smartphone collaboration, could already access location-aware navigation, photo editing, streaming radio and other content from the Nokia Collection of applications accessible from the Windows Phone Marketplace. 'World Class E-Book Experience' The new Nokia Reading hub, offering searches in multiple languages, will allow "publishers, including Penguin and Hachette, and Pearson to launch a world class e-book and audiobook experience that's been designed specifically for the Nokia Lumia," the company said in a blog post. Availability begins this week in France, Germany, Italy, Russia, Spain and the United Kingdom, with other countries to follow. Samsung is king of mobile phones, while Apple owns a not-too shabby 7.9 percent of the global phone market. And Android remains the top operating system, with more than half the market. Those are some of the findings of a report on the global mobile market in the first quarter of the year by Gartner. Nokia Is Slipping South Korea-based Samsung's sales to end users amounted to 20.7 percent of the worldwide total in the quarter, up from 16.1 percent in the same quarter last year, Gartner said. That growth comes at the expense of Nokia, the Finnish company that saw its share shrink from 25.1 percent to 19.8 percent. California-based Apple received its accustomed dose of good news with a share that doubled from 3.9 percent to 7.8 quarter over quarter. The phrase "Can you hear me now" has entered the jet age. Passengers on certain Virgin Atlantic flights are now able to use their cell phones to make and receive phone calls at 35,000 feet, the airline announced Tuesday. The British airline's new service could be a blessing for business travelers who want to stay connected during eight-hour flights across the ocean. It could also be a nightmare for the passenger sitting next to them. "I suspect most passengers, like myself, would prefer not to listen to somebody on the phone for what might be hours," said airline analyst Robert Mann. Only six passengers at a time will be able to use the system, which the airline says is intended "for use in exceptional situations." Passengers will be able to send text messages, make a call or access email on mobile devices. The airline won't charge extra for the service but cell phone users will be charged their carrier's international roaming rates. Initially, the service -- which utilizes a satellite connection -- will only be available for customers of European cell phone providers O2 and Vodafone and U.S. carrier T-Mobile. The service debuted Tuesday on the airline's new Airbus A330-300 planes flying between New York and London. It will expand to nearly 20 planes by year-end, from a handful now. Dubai-based Emirates became the first carrier to allow passengers to use their personal cell phones back in 2008. A handful of other airlines in the Middle East including Oman Air and Royal Jordanian now have similar services. South Korean handset maker LG Electronics Inc. has upgraded its flagship smartphone model with a faster chip and a longer battery life, hoping to regain ground lost to more nimble rivals. Samsung, the world's No. 1 mobile-phone maker, appears to have another hit device on its hands even before it goes on store shelves overseas at the end of the month. The Galaxy S III, the latest flagship phone from the South Korean electronics giant, has already racked up 9 million pre-orders, according to a report published in a South Korean business newspaper. The Korea Economic Daily, citing an unnamed Samsung official as its source, said the orders came from a hundred carriers and the company was producing about 5 million Galaxies per month.
