10 Best Paid iPhone Apps (Appolicious)

Appolicious - Apple’s iPhone does a lot of cool things, but one of the coolest things is its ability to use apps – which do even more cool things. Lots of those apps are free, but many cost a few bucks. Knowing which ones to grab the credit card for can be a tough enterprise, since you have no way of knowing what you’re getting before you download it. Yahoo! News: Personal Technology »

Google Would Have Paid More Than $100 Million to Major Labels for Licenses (Mashable)

Mashable - Many music fans were disappointed by Google Music Beta, the cloud-based locker that the company released at Google I/O this year -- in particular because it lacks the ability to purchase music and stream seamlessly without uploading. Now it seems Google was prepared to offer big bucks to make a more robust notion. Bloomberg Businessweek is reporting that Google was ready to shell out $100 million to the four major labels -- up front -- for licenses. However, those negotiations fell apart because of "the music industry's concern that search results in Google and YouTube often point to pirated music." Yahoo! News: Internet News »

Mashable - Amid continued rumors that Hulu is considering a sale to Google, Yahoo or Microsoft, Hulu CEO Jason Kilar has revealed some eye-opening second-quarter statistics. The company, it seems, has never looked healthier. Online Schools Making Degrees Cheaper

As Wikipedia upended the encyclopedia industry and iTunes changed the music business, a host of new online enterprises are showing the potential to change higher education. These businesses are making earning a college degree cheaper, faster and flexible enough to take work experience into account. Ryan Yoder, 35, a computer programmer who had earned 72 credits at the University of South Florida years ago, signed up with an outfit called StraighterLine, paid $216 to take two courses in accounting and one in business communication, and a month later transferred the credits to Thomas Edison State College in New Jersey, which awarded him a bachelor's degree in June. Alan Long, 34, a paramedic and fire captain, used another new institution, Learning Counts, to create a portfolio that included his certifications and a narrative spelling out what he had learned on the job. He paid $750 to Learning Counts and came out with seven credits at Ottawa University in Kansas, where he would have had to spend $2,800 to earn them in a classroom. And Erin Larson, who works full time at a television station but wanted to become a teacher, paid $3,000 per semester to Western Governors University for as many classes as she could handle -- plus a weekly call from a mentor. "Anywhere else, it would have cost three arms and legs," said Ms. Larson, 40, "and as a certified procrastinator, I found that weekly call very useful." For those who have the time and money, the four-year residential campus still offers what is widely considered the best educational experience. Critics worry that the online courses are less rigorous and more vulnerable to cheating, and that their emphasis on providing credentials for specific jobs could undermine the traditional mission of encouraging critical thinking. But most experts agree that given the exploding technologies, cuts to... newsfactor.com »

Apple CEO Tim Cook Could Top Pay List for 2011

Tim Cook could well end up being the highest paid CEO in America in 2011, after Apple Inc. granted him a million restricted stock units last August for taking the reins shortly before co-founder Steve Jobs died. An Associated Press review of a securities filing shows Cook's pay package was valued at $378 million. The vast majority came in a grant of a million restricted stock units worth $376 million at the time. Half of the stock units will vest in August 2016, the other half in August 2021. His salary and performance bonus, about $900,000 each, made up much of the rest. He also made $16,520 from company contributions to a 401(k) retirement account and company-paid life insurance premiums. In comparison, Jobs accepted a $1 annual salary for years and owned about 5.5 million shares, worth about $2.3 billion today. In total, Cook has about 1.36 million restricted shares that haven't yet vested and 13,754 regular shares worth a combined $580 million, the filing showed. Cook's award is well above that given to Philippe Dauman, the Viacom Inc. chief executive who led the top paid CEOs of 2010 with an $84.5 million haul based on a new contract that granted him shares and stock options. Cook's pay package was also valued at more than all of the next nine highest paid CEOs of 2010 combined, or about $356 million. Apple said that its compensation goal is to encourage long-term results above short-term risk-taking, and the 51-year-old former chief operating officer won't begin to reap the actual benefits of the stock award for another four years. But Securities and Exchange Commission rules compel companies to book a share grant's value in the year it is granted, making Cook's whopper of a pay package unlikely to be beat. Cook's share grant was already known last year. The filing disclosed that... newsfactor.com »

Amazon Grows Share of Paid Android App Sales

The Amazon Appstore has quickly become a major force in paid mobile app sales for Google's Android platform, according to a new report from Distimo. The mobile app analytics firm found that 42 of the top 110 paid mobile apps available from both Google and Amazon generated more revenue through the Amazon Appstore than Android Market last month. Amazon's new Kindle Fire, which sold more than 3.9 million units in the final three months of 2011, was the driving force behind Amazon's mobile app sales in January. However, Amazon may also have benefited from having less clutter in its Appstore, which offers about 26,800 apps as opposed to the 400,000-plus apps on tap in Android Market. Only 32 percent of the mobile offerings at Android Market were paid apps in January. By contrast, paid mobile apps in Amazon's Appstore accounted for around 65 percent of the total and have also been selling for substantially less than what Google charges, on average. The average price of the top 100 paid applications in the Amazon Appstore is 40 percent lower than in the Google Android Market, said Hendrik Koekkoek, author of the report for Distimo, which is based in Utrecht, The Netherlands. "One of the reasons could be that Amazon is responsible for setting the price in its store," Koekkoek said. "While all available paid apps are $3.13 in the Google Android Market, these applications are $2.77 in the Amazon Appstore." Creating a Platform Within a Platform What Amazon appears to be doing is creating a platform within a platform, and is off to a good start with more than 26,000 apps already in stock, said Al Hilwa, director of applications software development at IDC. "By leveraging the Android ecosystem, Amazon is able to bring apps very quickly [to market]," Hilwa said. "The work involved in... newsfactor.com »

GM Drops Paid Facebook Ads, Will Still Use Free Pages

With some 900 million user accounts, Facebook would seem to be the perfect venue for advertisers. The question is, despite the amount of time people spend logged on, posting updates, chatting with friends and sharing pictures, how much does the advertising that has made Facebook a multibillion-dollar concern in a short eight years really move products? Not enough, the nation's leading automobile manufacturer has apparently concluded. In its case, paid advertising on the world's biggest social network hasn't justified the cost. $10 Million Campaign The Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday that General Motors was pulling its ads for cars on Facebook, while continuing to use free pages to publicize its products. The paid advertising had reportedly amounted to $10 million. The decision may reflect a mindset of "why buy the cow when you can get the milk for free?" That could be troubling on some level for the Mark Zuckerberg-founded company as it heads toward an initial public stock offering Friday that hinges on future profitability and revenue growth. The company could be valued as high as $100 billion. "GM's move is certainly likely to give other advertisers pause, especially given the company's heft, its reputation for advertising savvy and its remarkable return from the grave," Charles King, principal analyst at Pund-IT, told us. "There have also been numerous similar situations in the past, where an initially hot Internet property cooled swiftly -- in some cases, by Antarctic proportions -- when exposed to close scrutiny." One example, King said, was Second Life, the virtual world created by Linden Research in 2003 that allows users to interact through avatars. Virtual Showrooms Didn't Pay "At one point, the site's fast growth and its popularity among the technology elite made it a go-to venue for numerous vendors and manufacturers, many of which built virtual 'showrooms' to market and advertise their goods," King... newsfactor.com »
