| 961 | Malicious cyber-attacks increased 81 percent during 2011 in comparison with the prior year, and criminals devoted less attention to spam and other well-known methods of exploiting security holes in preference for specifically targeted attacks, according to a new report from Symantec.
The number of targeted attacks using social engineering and customized malware to gain unauthorized access to sensitive information grew from 77 per day to 82 per day by the end of 2011, Symantec said. Furthermore, hackers began targeting companies and government organizations of all sizes.
Cyber-criminals also adopted new strategies for targeting the security vulnerabilities of smartphones, media tablets and other mobile devices. Mobile vulnerabilities increased by a whopping 93 percent last year -- and with the number of threats targeting Google's Android mobile platform rising significantly.
"One of the most popular ways for phone malware authors to make money is by sending premium SMS messages from infected phones," the new report's authors wrote. "This technique was used by 18 percent of the mobile threats identified in 2011."
Unfortunately, there is no single preventive measure that will guarantee safety from all attacks, said Kevin Haley, the director of product management at Symantec Security Response.
"There are so many kinds of attacks that it's difficult for users to know what threats are the most dangerous, and how to stay on top of them, Haley wrote in a blog post Monday."But each can be dealt with individually."
SMB Security Threats
When huge corporations or government organizations get hacked the events generate a flurry of newspaper headlines. However, more than half of last year's targeted attacks were actually directed at enterprises with fewer than 2,500 employees -- and over 18 percent targeted organizations with fewer than 250 employees.
"They're not just targeting executives with deep access to confidential information either," Haley warned. "Fifty-eight percent of people... newsfactor.com » | | 962 | Cisco has completed the acquisition of ClearAccess, a company that offers telco management software that competes with legacy systems in an age of mobile video. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
ClearAccess provides software to service providers for the provisioning and management of residential and mobile devices. Cisco picked up the software and the talent, which is being integrated into the Cisco Network Management Technology Group.
As Cisco sees it, service providers are faced with growing network complexity, exploding video and data traffic, and an increasing number of devices connected to their networks. With the proliferation of these devices, Cisco has noticed a clear trend: Service providers are looking for ways to immediately lower operating expense while delivering and enabling new services.
Beefing Up Cisco Prime
Jamie Lerner, vice president and general manager of Cisco Network Management Technology Group's Service Provider Applications division, said the ClearAccess acquisition will accelerate Cisco's software architectural advancements in mobility, cloud and managed devices, and video.
"ClearAccess provides a critical technology that will advance Cisco's mission to offer service providers a complete set of tools to manage their networks, within the home and across any connected device, amid the ongoing proliferation in network traffic," he explained.
Cisco believes ClearAccess' management and software capabilities will augment Cisco Prime -- Cisco's network management software portfolio -- by offering service providers a set of tools for managing the connected home, including monitoring and managing bandwidth usage, parental controls, diagnostics and analytics.
Driving Network Visibility
We caught up with Zeus Kerravala, principal analyst at ZK Research, to get his take on how important Cisco's latest acquisition is in the grand networking scheme. He told us that with the impending mobile traffic tsunami, it's vital for operators to have a clear understanding of what is going on in their network.

HomeFusion Broadband, available in six markets since March, rolls out nationwide on Thursday and will allow customers to replace a designated server line for Internet access with a device that looks a bit like a kitchen appliance.
One Gadget Connects 24 Devices
The cylinder-shaped antenna, which must be professionally installed, taps into the 4G LTE signal and transmits it to up to 20 wireless devices and up to four wired devices in the home.
Verizon's LTE network is now available in 230 markets covering more than two-thirds of the population in the United States, the carrier boasts.
"With HomeFusion Broadband, customers across the United States, in towns large and small, will have the chance to link devices to the Internet and take advantage of the speed, coverage and connectivity offered by our 4G LTE network." said Tami Erwin, Verizon Wireless vice president and chief marketing officer said in announcing the service.
The carrier is promising customers the same average data speeds that mobile users with 4G devices expect: 5 to 12 megabits per second for downloads and 2 to 5 Mbps for uploads.
Internet addicts may pay a steep price, though. Like mobile, the service does not include an unlimited option. The cost is $60 a month for 10 gigabytes of data, $90 for 20 GB and $120 for 30 GB, with $10 per GB overage. The HomeFusion device costs $199.99, with free installation, and the data allowance is doubled for the first two billing cycles as a promotion.

#vk ixbt.com » | | 971 | WatchESPN, the online and mobile version of Disney's popular sports TV network, was activated Tuesday for most of Comcast's 22 million video subscribers.
It's one of the perks being offered to cable subscribers to convince them to keep paying for TV. Getting online or mobile access to shows you already pay for is known in the industry as "TV Everywhere."
The new offering results from a 10-year deal between Comcast Corp. and The Walt Disney Co. that was announced in January. It doubles the number of customers able to access WatchESPN to about 40 million.
"We think that's a fantastic start for only being at this a year and a half," said Matt Murphy, ESPN's senior vice president of digital video distribution.
WatchESPN offers live feeds of four pay TV networks: ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN3 and ESPNU. It also offers on-the-go access to feeds of ESPN Goal Line when college football is underway or ESPN Buzzer Beater during college basketball season.
Its predecessor, ESPN Broadband, later renamed ESPN 360 and then ESPN3, was a separate channel started up in 2001. ESPN3 was only available online and offered streams of games that were a bit off the beaten path. WatchESPN gives users access to the regular ESPN channel, including shows like Monday Night Football, and its spinoffs.
Customers of Time Warner Cable Inc., Bright House Networks, and Verizon FiOS also have access to WatchESPN. Its app, available on iPads and iPhones, has been downloaded about 8 million times.
For now, the online and mobile versions come with few or no ads as the Disney subsidiary experiments with interactive advertising. During TV commercials, the online version often puts up a message that says "Commercial break. We'll be right back."

T-Mobile is commissioning a "4G LTE" network, the same technology used by Verizon Wireless and AT&T Inc. for their high-speed networks. It will use, in part, radio frequencies handed over by AT&T after the bigger company backed off its deal to buy T-Mobile due to opposition from federal regulators.
In addition to handing over spectrum licenses, AT&T gave T-Mobile $3 billion in cash, which will help finance the upgrade. T-Mobile plans to have the network live next year, covering 75 percent of the 25 largest cities.
Sweden's Ericsson is one of the main suppliers for the LTE networks of Verizon Wireless, AT&T and Sprint Nextel Corp., along with Alcatel-Lucent SA of France.
For Nokia Siemens Networks, a joint venture of Finland's Nokia Corp. and Siemens AG of Germany, the T-Mobile order represents a new chance to get into the U.S. market for network equipment. It got a $7 billion order from Harbinger Capital, a hedge fund, to build a network for its startup, LightSquared, but that project appears moribund because regulators concluded it would have interfered with GPS navigation.
T-Mobile USA is making the announcement on the first day of CTIA Wireless, the U.S. cellphone industry trade show, in New Orleans. We caught up with Jake Wengroff, global director of Social Media Strategy and Research at Frost & Sullivan, to get his take on Facebook's latest move. After T-Mobile USA's merger deal with AT&T went down in flames last year, its parent organization, Deutsche Telekom AG, seems still hungry to unload the money-losing business, lagging behind Verizon Wireless, AT&T Mobility and Sprint Nextel.
So the German conglomerate may be looking to another carrier for a merger. Bloomberg News reported on Thursday that Deutsche Telekom has discussed options with MetroPCS Communications, which is shopping for partners. Otherwise, the Germans may decide to launch an initial public offering of T-Mobile stock or sell off the company lock, stock and barrel, Bloomberg said, citing people familiar with the matter.
As of January, Richardson, Texas-based MetroPCS had 9.5 million subscribers, compared with T-Mobile's more than 33 million.
Humm Is Mum
In a call with reporters Thursday, T-Mobile CEO and president Philipp Humm declined to confirm or deny the merger reports.
"You will understand that we don't comment on speculations," he told reporters.
T-Mobile walked away with a $3 billion "breakup fee" paid by AT&T after federal regulators put the brakes on AT&T's attempt to acquire the smaller carrier, which would have enabled the No. 2 carrier to acquire much needed spectrum.
First-quarter earnings show that T-Mobile gained 187,000 net customers, compared with 99,000 net customer losses in the first quarter of 2011. The company did, however, lose 510,000 branded contract customers, but that is less than it did in the previous quarter and in the first quarter of 2011.
"In the first quarter, T-Mobile USA delivered strong performance across several key metrics -- adding customers, increasing branded [average revenue per users] year-on-year and effectively managing costs to deliver a solid adjusted [operating income before depreciation and amortization] margin," Humm said in a statement.

The average number of mobile apps per smartphone jumped from 32 apps to 41 apps during 2011 -- a 28 percent rise in comparison with 2010, according to a new report from Nielsen.
However, U.S. smartphone owners spent about the same amount of time using mobile apps each day in 2011 as they had during the previous year -- 39 minutes per day versus 37 minutes per day, Nielsen said.
Nielsen researchers said 70 percent of the survey's respondents expressed "concern over personal data collection" and 55 percent were "wary of sharing information about their location via smartphone apps." So we asked Al Hilwa, director of applications software development at IDC, what developers need to do to address privacy concerns as well as prod U.S. smartphone users to spend more time using their apps.

And Android remains the top operating system, with more than half the market.
Those are some of the findings of a report on the global mobile market in the first quarter of the year by Gartner.
Nokia Is Slipping
South Korea-based Samsung's sales to end users amounted to 20.7 percent of the worldwide total in the quarter, up from 16.1 percent in the same quarter last year, Gartner said. That growth comes at the expense of Nokia, the Finnish company that saw its share shrink from 25.1 percent to 19.8 percent.
California-based Apple received its accustomed dose of good news with a share that doubled from 3.9 percent to 7.8 quarter over quarter. Considering that Apple makes only a single smartphone (in varying generations and storage capacity), the news is impressive.
Research In Motion dropped from 3.0 percent to 2.4 percent. The Canadian BlackBerry maker lags behind China's ZTE, South Korea's LG and China's Huawei to take up seventh place.
Gartner's report follows one by Strategy Analytics based on vendor surveys that put Samsung at the top of the market with a 31 percent share, toppling Nokia's 14-year reign at the top spot.
Google's Android OS saw substantial growth year over year, from 36.4 percent to 56.1 percent, while Apple's iOS also grew from 16.9 percent to 22.9 percent, according to Gartner. Park Jong-seok, president of LG's mobile business, said Thursday the new model is for South Korean users only but similar iterations would be released overseas.
LG, which is recuperating from massive losses in its mobile business since 2010, is betting on the introduction of a faster mobile network called LTE around the world to boost smartphone sales.
Mobile carriers in South Korea, Japan, North America and Europe have begun services on the latest wireless network, aiming to lure consumers seeking quicker downloads of videos and smooth web surfing on a phone.
With a 2-gigabyte memory capacity, the new Optimus phone can run multiple applications simultaneously at a faster rate, LG said. Most other high-end smartphones have a 1- or 1.5-gigabyte memory.
LG claimed the new phone's battery life is about 40 percent longer than its predecessor, the Optimus LTE.

#vk ixbt.com » | | 987 | Google's recent decision to take a more active role in how its Android mobile operating system is used is seen as an attempt to address the single most vexing problem in the Android world -- the fragmentation of the one, "pure" Android into hundreds of slightly different versions through its modification by smartphone and tablet makers.
Google also hopes to better compete with Apple, which keeps a tight rein on its operating system and knows that every iPhone, iPad and iPod is running the exact same version of the software.
Google's problem with Android is that it was released as open-source software, available for anyone to use and also -- and here is where the trouble comes in -- to modify in any way they see fit.
Smartphone manufacturers, almost without exception, have modified Android to create their own custom versions, with modified user interfaces and features not found in the "pure" release version to differentiate their phone offerings from those of the competition.
So Sprint phones run on "Sprint Android" and T-Mobile phones come with "T-Mobile Android" and so on.
Tablet manufacturers have followed suit.
The problems arose when new versions of the stock Android were released. The upgrades could only make their way into the Android device universe painfully slowly, as each manufacturer had to go back to square one to modify the new version so it could successfully begin to update all the phones or tablets of its existing customers. This often took months or even longer, leading to customer frustration.
Compare that with Apple. When it was ready to release iOS 5, it knew that every Apple device out there running iOS 4 was running a single version -- Apple's version -- and was therefore ready to be upgraded without problems or delays.

Samsung was a distant second (7.5 percent), followed by Amazon (4 percent), Research In Motion (2.3 percent) and Asus (2.3 percent).
Unlike research firms IDC and Gartner, which consider PCs and media tablets to be separate product categories, DisplaySearch regards media tablets as a product subcategory within the mobile PC market overall. Under the firm's distinct methodology, Apple also led the global mobile PC market with a 22.5 percent share.
During the first quarter, Apple shipped 17.2 million mobile PC units overall -- equivalent to 118 percent year-over-year growth. Nearly 80 percent of Apple's mobile PC shipments during the quarter were iPads.
Apple's mobile PC shipments were nearly double those of its nearest competitor. During the first quarter, No. 2 mobile PC vendor Hewlett-Packard shipped 8.9 million units and achieved an 11.6 percent market share, DisplaySearch noted Tuesday.
Excluding Tablets, HP Retains Lead
When subtracting media tablet unit shipments from the mix, however, HP stayed atop the global mobile PC market with a 16.2 percent share. Acer was second at 11.9 percent, followed by Lenovo (10.6 percent), Dell (10.2 percent) and Asus (8.1 percent).
Though Acer enjoyed robust sales in China during the first quarter, DisplaySearch noted that Lenovo was the chief beneficiary of the China region's strong shipment growth. What's more, Lenovo's notebook and mini-note sales succeeded in gaining more traction in North America at the expense of Dell, which has been shifting its focus to the commercial market segment in the region.
Asus succeeded in gaining market share across all regions after a weak fourth quarter in 2011. According to DisplaySearch, the Taiwan-based PC maker was the most aggressive of the top... newsfactor.com » | | 989 |
