T-Mobile Slashes 1,900 Jobs, AT&T Blames Failed Merger

In a move many industry watchers expected after the failed AT&T merger, T-Mobile is cutting jobs. However, the wireless carrier is perhaps shedding a larger number than some hoped, as it moves to consolidate its call center operations from 24 to 17 facilities by the end of June. Call centers scheduled for closure are in Allentown, Pa.; Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; Frisco and Brownsville, Texas; Lenexa, Kan.; Thornton, Colo.; and Redmond, Ore. Altogether, T-Mobile said, it will shed 1,900 jobs. T-Mobile employs about 3,300 people at the seven facilities. "Concentrating call centers is an important step to achieve competitive cost structures to successfully compete as challenger and value player in the wireless market," said Philipp Humm, CEO and president of T-Mobile. "These are not easy steps to take, but they are necessary to realize efficiency in order to invest for growth." T-Mobile to Rehire 1,400 If there is a silver lining to the 3,300 jobs lost at the closed centers, T-Mobile said it would begin hiring immediately at its other 17 call centers and expects to bring on as many as 1,400 new call center operators to keep up with customer demand. T-Mobile is inviting employees from the seven closing facilities to transfer to another location. T-Mobile said affected call centers will remain open for the next three months and employees can continue working. Employees who choose not to transfer (with relocation assistance) from the company will be offered transition packages that include severance pay and outplacement support. T-Mobile is setting up on-site career centers at all seven facilities to provide employees with a personal career coach and access to job search training, tools and technologies. T-Mobile also plans to pay for two months of continued health care coverage for eligible employees who elect COBRA benefits. "A merger with AT&T likely would have consolidated the call centers, so... newsfactor.com »

Apple CEO Tim Cook Bests Steve Jobs in CEO Ratings

Tim Cook is getting the nod from Apple employees. A new survey of the Top 25 Highest Rated CEOs puts Apple's CEO at the top of the list, with a 97 percent approval rating. The anonymous Glassdoor survey shows that Cook has been well received by employees -- even slightly better than the late former CEO Steve Jobs. Jobs' rating from March 2010 to March 2011 was slightly lower than Cook's, at 95 percent. Ernst & Young CEO Jim Turley comes in second to Cook with a 95 percent approval rate. He is followed by Qualcomm CEO Paul Jacobs (95 percent) and American Express CEO Ken Chenault (94 percent). Google CEO Larry Page made it into the top five with a 94 percent approval rate. Will Cook's Empathy Backfire? We caught up today with Rob Enderle, principal analyst at the Enderle Group, who has watched the internal dynamics at Apple for years, to get his perspective on the news. "Apple employees love Tim Cook. When you've had a CEO that likes to use the whip a lot and then you suddenly get a CEO who doesn't, that difference is going to be rather pronounced," Enderle said. "I think Cook is benefiting from the fact, and significantly so, that Jobs was a very, very difficult guy to work for. A hostile environment at Apple under Jobs would be an understatement. Cook is much more empathetic." But will the change in leadership style ultimately prove beneficial to Apple? As Enderle describes it, Jobs' Apple was a company that ran largely on fear -- but it was trading at the top of its game. If you remove that element of fear as a motivator, will Apple be as successful long term? "The new Apple is a friendlier Apple, but the new Apple probably won't be as... newsfactor.com »

Sony Plans To Cut 10,000 Jobs, Reduce TV Models

Electronics behemoth Sony, battling years of losses, on Thursday said it will slash 10,000 jobs and slim down its far-flung TV line in an effort to right its ailing business. Sony's massive overhaul comes two days after the electronics maker forecast a more than twofold increase in losses, from $2.7 billion to $6.4 billion, than previously projected for fiscal 2011. Newly minted CEO and President Kazuo Hirai held a news conference in Tokyo, where he outlined a turnaround strategy aimed at putting Sony on a path to profitability. "Now is the time for Sony to change," Hirai said. "Everyone at Sony is standing together to make this happen." The company expects to reduce the number of TV models by 40% in the next year. That decision comes after Sony recently completed the sale of its share of an LCD plant to Samsung. Sony expects the combined moves to return the division to profitability in the next two years. "The most pressing issue the Sony Group faces right now is the rebuilding and future growth of the electronics business," Hirai said. Sony's once-hip brand -- its Walkman was as iconic as an iPhone -- in the 1980s inspired the late Steve Jobs of Apple. But recently, it has trailed in mobile electronics and found little traction in smartphones or tablets, areas dominated by Apple, Samsung and HTC. "It sounds like that is going to be more of a focus for them," says Forrester analyst Sarah Rotman Epps. "It's a highly competitive market. They're going up against established market leaders." Also, Nokia and Microsoft are making moves with the next generation of Windows Mobile in a bid for mobile devices that will compete against Sony, she says. Meanwhile, Sony's entertainment and financial services divisions remain stable and poised for future growth, Hirai says. Sony wants to boost its digital... newsfactor.com »

Apple CEO Tim Cook Emerges from Steve Jobs' Shadow

Apple CEO Tim Cook has long seen as the humorless and unemotional guy running the show from behind the scenes. But he is beginning to reveal a more assertive and eloquent side, hinting that he's learning to shoulder more of Steve Jobs' role as a front man and leader. On a conference call with journalists and financial analysts late Tuesday, Cook showed some fire when talking about competitors, echoing the combative Jobs. He also spouted a vivid metaphor that spread like wildfire over Twitter before the call was over. Most Apple watchers have sized up Cook as a competent caretaker of the machine that Apple founder and late CEO Steve Jobs created, but if Cook has latent charisma that can be thawed out further, he may turn into the kind of leader some people think is essential for the company. In a blog post Wednesday, George Colony, the CEO of Forrester Research, predicted that Apple Inc. will go the way of Sony, fading away now that Jobs is not around to inspire. "Without the arrival of a new charismatic leader it will move from being a great company to being a good company," he wrote. Even while Jobs was alive, Cook handled appearances in front of Wall Street analysts. He spoke precisely and calmly, and his language wasn't very quotable. At a Goldman Sachs investors meeting in February, for instance, he said "our high order bit is we want to please customers." A "high order bit" is a computer science term for the most important piece of data in a set. But on Tuesday, when asked if PCs and tablets might someday blend into one device, like rival PC manufacturers hope, Cook extemporized this response: "I think anything can be forced to converge. The problem is that products are about tradeoffs, and you begin to make tradeoffs... newsfactor.com »

SMART Jobs Act:

SMART Jobs Act (Sustaining our Most Advanced Researchers and Technology). Если законопроект пройдёт, то изменятся условия студенческой визы F4, и она позволит иностранному студенту остаться на территории США на срок до 12 месяцев после окончания вуза, чтобы найти работу или создать свой собственный стартап.
