At that speed, 1 trillion bits per second, the entire Web archive of the U.S. Library of Congress could be transferred in an hour, the company said.
The speed for this new chipset, nicknamed "Holey Optochip," is eight times faster than the fastest optical components now on the market, and the company said in a statement that the breakthrough could "transform how data is accessed, shared and used for a new era of communications, computing and entertainment."
The Era of 'Big Data'
Applications for such high-speed data transfer, in the era of what has been described as "Big Data," could include faster transmission and remote processing of data mass capture and modeling, weather forecasting, or various kinds of data-intensive analytics -- not to mention faster online delivery of high-definition videos.
Optical networking uses light pulses instead of electrons to transmit data, and the research is part of a larger effort to increase speed and develop low-cost, high-volume manufacturing for such technology. With manufacturing in mind, the company said that the components used to build the prototype are commercially available.
In the IBM approach, 48 holes were fabricated through a regular silicon CMOS chip. The holes were used to provide optical access to two dozen receiver and transmitter channels, using industry-standard vertical cavity surface-emitting lasers and photodiode arrays. This technique led to the very compact, power-efficient, and high-performance optical module.
The Holey Optochip is designed for direct coupling to a standard 48-channel multimode fiber array. The power efficiency is among the highest yet reported, as the transceiver requires less than five watts.

The stock surged $10.04, or 19.5 percent, to finish at $61.43. Red Hat shares haven't been that high since March 2000, a time that coincided with the height of the dot-com boom when hundreds of technology stocks reached record levels.
Thursday's rally reflected the renewed enthusiasm for the Raleigh, N.C.-based company, whose main product depends on Linux -- a line of computer coding that a community of so-called "open-source" programmers began developing 20 years ago.
Red Hat Inc. makes money by charging for upgrades and other services needed for its Linux-based operating system to run smoothly.
It's a business model that has drawn plenty of skeptics who thought Linux was better suited for computer hobbyists than large companies leery of technological hiccups.
Red Hat's operating system, though, has steadily won converts, enabling the company to increase its revenue for 40 consecutive quarters. The gains have propelled Red Hat's annual revenue beyond $1 billion for the first time in its 19-year history. The company now has a market value near $12 billion.
"We are proving the skeptics wrong," Charlie Peters, Red Hat's chief financial officer, crowed in a Thursday interview.
As has been the case for years, Red Hat still faces formidable competition from far larger software makers, including Microsoft Corp. and Oracle Corp., that could slow its growth.

With its latest innovation, AMD is targeting users of mid- to high-end graphics-intensive applications like digital signage, casino gaming, point-of-sale systems and kiosks, as well as parallel-processing-intensive applications.
The Embedded R-Series APU combines AMD's new "Piledriver" CPU architecture with its DirectX 11-capable AMD Radeon HD 7000 Series graphics in a heterogeneous multicore embedded processing platform.
Buddy Broeker, director of AMD Embedded Solutions, said AMD developed the embedded APU to offer its customers a high-performance, power-efficient, small form-factor embedded processor.
"By leveraging its seamlessly integrated heterogeneous system architecture, developers can tap into a high-performance and efficient parallel processing engine to accelerate their graphics- and compute-intensive applications, all while using industry-standard libraries such as OpenCL and DirectCompute," Broeker said.
Under the Hood
When you lift up the hood, so to speak, on the Embedded R-Series APU, you'll find that it integrates dedicated resources that work to drive performance with shared resources while simultaneously reducing power consumption and die space.
Because of its scalability, AMD said, the new APU gives developers the flexibility to leverage the same board design and software stack for a variety of apps. The Embedded R-Series also integrates discrete-class graphics into the processor, which means apps that previously required a separate graphics processor or card now can be delivered on a wide range of form factors.
Devs working with the AMD Embedded R-Series APU can implement remote management, client virtualization and security capabilities. By visiting www.cablewifi.com, customers of Brighthouse Networks, Cox Communications, Optimum Online and Xfinity can now find hotspots across the country available with their customer log-in. The CableWiFi network monicker will eventually replace those of the individual cable companies.
'New Era of Opportunity'
The coalition members "will allow each other's high-speed Internet customers access to over 50,000 hotspots," the Web site tells visitors. "CableWiFi is the network name created as an extension of the Wi-Fi services offered by the Internet service providers listed here."
Wi-Fi searchers can browse the site by specific location (i.e., Grand Central Station), by location type or by city and check for indoor hotspots, outdoor hotspots and partner hotspots.
"The way customers are using our service continues to evolve," said Cox Communications COO Jill Campbell in a joint statement issued by all five companies Monday. "This is a new area of opportunity that we need to explore."
