Ronald McDonald Hops Online To Appeal to Kids

Ronald McDonald is alive, well and raising eyebrows in a new TV campaign that asks kids to download their photos to his Web site and create photos of themselves with him. In a nation where kid-targeted fast-food spots have been panned as a cause of childhood obesity, there has been much media speculation that the world's most famous spokes-clown was disappearing from McDonald's advertising. Far from it. Ronald McDonald never did get axed. And in a half-dozen ads to launch over the next several months, he's a chipper Ronald-in-motion: dancing, playing soccer, shooting hoops -- and nudging kids to visit his Web site and download photos and videos -- Ronaldgrams -- to share with friends. "Kids today live in a digital world," says Dean Barrett, McDonald's global marketing officer. "You have to speak to kids in a digital language to connect." Not everyone's a fan. "Parents are going crazy trying to deal with the Internet and social networking and their kids," says advertising and clinical psychologist Carol Moog. "Why would I want my kid to do this?" But Paul Kurnit, founder of the KidShop consulting firm, says it will be a hit. The No. 1 activity that kids do online is interact with TV properties from their offline life, he says. "Online is where the world is going." In one commercial that kicks off April 6 on Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network, a chatty Ronald greets folks on the street and poses with them for photos in an empty picture frame that he's carrying. "You can picture yourself with Ronald at Happymeal.com," says an off-screen voice. "Ask parents permission." One watchdog group says Ronald McDonald is going too far with this campaign. "I think it's interesting that the commercials remind kids to ask their parents for permission before going to play with Ronald on the Internet," says Deborah Lapidus,... newsfactor.com »

Plusist.com - Connect Facebook With Google Plus

What's the social networking service we're all going to be using in one year to this date? Is Google Plus toppling Facebook? Or is there enough room for both in people's lives? Experts say that both services are going to coexist happily, that they have clearly-defined niches of their own. If they're right (and even if they're not), this means applications that can consolidate one's social activity are going to be more necessary than ever. Plusist is one such tool.

Philanderers Find a Booming Market Online

Husbands and wives take note: If Valentine's Day expectations aren't met, your mate might soon be looking elsewhere for a little romance and appreciation. That may sound like a cautionary tale, but for Noel Biderman and others who have founded dating Web sites for married people, it's a lucrative business. "The day after Valentine's Day is one of our biggest days of the year," says Biderman, founder and CEO of Ashley Madison, a 10-year-old site that unapologetically caters to "discreet" encounters for the married or otherwise attached. "People are disappointed by their spouses' lack of effort, and they feel especially undervalued when there is a societal expectation of romance. Certain days of the year act as litmus tests for many people in relationships." Web sites designed to facilitate cheating appear to be thriving; some earn tens of millions of dollars a year, and competition is growing. In addition to Toronto-based Ashley Madison, there's a growing crop of copycats that equate affairs with romance, passion and adventure. Whether these sites promote cheating or just facilitate it is up for debate. "People are going to cheat regardless of whether Ashley Madison is there or not," says sociologist Diane Kholos Wysocki of the University of Nebraska-Kearney, who has surveyed the site's members for her latest research. "There's a bigger social issue going on -- people aren't taking care of their marriages. "It's not so much that they're going to these cheating Web sites because the sex is greater or the person is more beautiful. It's because the person is giving them attention they're not getting at home." Some of the sites are based in Europe and increasingly have become international, with their eye on the USA. "American people are really hypocrites about infidelity," says Teddy Truchot, co-founder of Gleeden, which launched in Europe in 2009, moved into Australia and entered the... newsfactor.com »

Airwaves to Be Freed Up for Faster, Better Wireless

A bill to auction off pieces of the public airwaves currently used for broadcast television so that they can be freed up for wireless Internet is making its way to President Obama's desk. Members of Congress are promoting it, in part, as a jobs bill. "With 13 million Americans still seeking employment, job creation is a driving force behind efforts to expand wireless broadband," wrote U.S. House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Fred Upton , R-Mich., and Communications and Technology Subcommittee Chairman Greg Walden, R-Ore. Obama is expected to sign the legislation, which could ultimately mean faster connections for wireless devices. Will Carriers Win the Bid? The need is great. The decision comes just says after Cisco's Visual Networking Index forecast an 18-fold growth in global mobile Internet data traffic from 2011 to 2016. The forecast predicts an annual run rate of 130 exabytes of mobile data traffic, which is equivalent to 33 billion DVDs, 4.3 quadrillion MP3s, and 813 quadrillion short text messages. Will AT&T and Verizon snap up the bandwidth? Should they be allowed to? Rob Enderle, principal analyst at Enderle Group, said the highest bidder is probably going to win -- and the wireless carriers will likely be among the highest bidders. "When you are a government that's clearly well in the red, being too choosy about who can buy what probably isn't going to get you the money you want," Enderle said. "There certainly is going to be concern about too much bandwidth being concentrated in too few companies, but overall I think users will see at least initially a benefit from this bandwidth because carriers will have to do less throttling." The Cost Benefits The bill's authors expect the spectrum auctions to bring in more than $15 billion in federal revenue. It also helps the Federal Communications Commission save billions of... newsfactor.com »

C++ / Обзор конференции Going Native'2012

«C++11 feels like a new language» Bjarne Stroustrup «We’re all learning C++11» Herb Sutter «We broke every single book on the planet, and we broke every single programmer on the planet» Herb Sutter Читать дальше → habrahabr.ru »
