Whether you are debating to give your vote to Harry Reid or Sharron Angle (Nevada Senate race), you need to stay informed. Yahoo! News: Personal Technology » | | 4 | A cyber attack on Friday paralyzed the Web site of a popular Russian independent newspaper, days after similar attacks knocked out Russia's most popular blogging site.
The Novaya Gazeta newspaper's Web site went down early Friday after a massive denial-of-service attack, Dmitry Muratov, the newspaper's editor, told The Associated Press.
The attacks involve a flood of computers all trying to connect to a single site at the same time, which overwhelm the computer server that handles the traffic.
Novaya Gazeta's Web site typically receives 70,000 to 120,000 unique visitors every day, Muratov said. But the attack was so strong that at one point the Web site got 70,000 visit requests every 14 seconds.
Muratov said the attacks aim to "discredit the public platforms which express alternative points of views." He said he believed the attacks are linked to Russia's 2011 parliamentary election and its presidential election in 2012.
Live Journal, Russia's most popular blogging site, suffered sustained outage earlier this week. President Dmitry Medvedev, an avid blogger, on Thursday condemned that attack as "outrageous and illegal."
Russian opposition leader Ilya Yashin also linked the attacks to the upcoming vote.
"It's quite possible that those people who have ordered the attack are planning the complete crash of Live Journal in the heat of the 2011-2012 election campaign," he wrote on his blog Friday.
The onslaught on Live Journal started with an attack on the blog of anti-corruption activist Alexey Navalny, said a statement from Maria Garnayeva, an analyst with the Russian computer security company Kaspersky Lab.
Novaya Gazeta quoted Kaspersky as saying the attack on the newspaper and on Live Journal originated from the same source. The lab was not immediately available for further comment. newsfactor.com » | | 5 | OTTAWA (Reuters) - A ban on early broadcasting of election results that dates from the 1930s puts Canada on a collision course with social media like Twitter and Facebook, making a scofflaw of anyone who tweets too soon.

Reuters: Internet News » | | 9 | While protesters make their feelings known about the presidential elections in Egypt, cyber activists are making their voice heard through distributed denial of service, or DDoS attacks, in the wake of Russia's parliament election.
President Vladmir Putin appears to be the slim winner, despite a communist rally. And the international community is using terms like voter fraud to describe the outcome. Indeed, election watchers are calling Russia's elections the dirtiest in years. And that has led to cyber attacks against the press that's calling out the apparent violations.
Moscow Echo, a popular Russian radio station, as well as Golos, an election monitoring group, are among those reporting massive cyber attacks against their operations. Meanwhile, the AFP reports several opposition news sites were also inaccessible on Sunday. Moscow Echo editor-in-chief Alexei Venediktov took to Twitter to spread the news: "The attack on the Web site on Election Day is clearly an attempt to inhibit publication of information about violations."
Political Activism Rising
Mike Paquette, chief strategy officer at Corero Network Security, said the massive DDoS attacks against independent news sites covering the Russian elections is more proof that true political activism is a real -- and strong -- motivator for Internet DDoS Attack activity. He said DDoS attacker motivations include criminal extortion, unfair business advantage, ideological and political activism, and pure fun.
"It is interesting to note ideological activism can be thought of as a superset, and is not strictly limited to electoral or government politics," Paquette said. "These recent events place DDoS at the heart of electoral politics, with claims being made that high-level officials, in attempts to sway election results, used DDoS attacks as a mechanism of propaganda, censorship, information withholding, and unfair political advantage."
As Paquette sees it, cyber attacks, especially DDoS attacks, present a material threat to governments around the... newsfactor.com » | | 10 | OTTAWA (Reuters) - The Canadian government, bowing to the power of Twitter and Facebook, said on Friday it would end a ban on reporting early election results before polls close across the country.
