| 31 | Browsing through daily deal sites to try and find the best bargains is something that wears thin pretty quickly, if only because there are just too many of them. You could spend the best part of the afternoon comparing and contrasting offers, and still be miles away from any kind of unequivocal idea of where the best deals really are. And knowing as much, someone has come up with this new service. As its name implies, what this service can do is to take daily screenshots of any site, and then having them delivered them to you. The idea is to let you track which changes your competitors are implementing day by day, and take all the necessary steps in order not to lose ground (or even face)
And something like this can also be used to track your very own site. Reuters: Internet News » | | 34 | Daily-deals sites took a hit this summer, according to three online research companies. Overall visits to the sites were down 25 percent last week compared with the second week in June, says Web tracker Experian Hitwise. Research from analytic company Compete showed Groupon had its first month-over-month drop in traffic this year in July, while tracker ComScore said this week that both Groupon and LivingSocial were down last week from their top weeks in June.
"With so many new entrants saturating the daily-deals space, deal fatigue may be setting in with consumers," says Matt Pace, Compete's managing director of retail and consumer products.
The tracking companies' data disagree over how the two daily-deals market leaders fared.
Experian says Groupon visits were down 50 percent last week from the second week of June, its peak week this year, and LivingSocial saw a 27 percent increase in visits.
Compete says Groupon saw just an 8.9 percent decline in visits last month. LivingSocial, Compete says, saw a much bigger decline of 28 percent.
ComScore's data show that unique visits to Groupon were down 22% last week compared with its peak week beginning June 12, while LivingSocial's visits were off 54% for the same period.
Groupon, which is preparing for an initial public stock offering, would not comment. LivingSocial did not respond to requests for comment.
Pace says "seasonality" may be the biggest factor in the traffic declines. But just as people might take a break from deals sites when traveling, some use them more. Christine Helsel of Charleston, Ill., says she uses Groupon only when she visits her daughter in Chicago, as it "almost never has any relevance in my small town."
There are hundreds of daily-deals sites and countless other sites offering coupons and other purported bargains. Experian's Bill Tancer says people are getting "in-box fatigue."

Blimey! Do we need yet another site allowing restaurateurs to offer daily deals to all of their customers? Well, if they try and do things a little differently, then the answer is certainly "yes". And Munch On Me is clearly one such site. It enables restaurant owners to offer steeply-discounted dishes that consumers can redeem using their mobiles. The additional savings will be offered through a customer loyalty program that Groupon plans to unveil Wednesday.
Merchants who join the service set a spending target for customers to hit before they qualify for an even steeper discount than Groupon usually offers through the millions of daily deals that it sells each week.
The new feature is meant to please consumers and merchants alike as Groupon tries to revive interest in its initial public offering of stock.
The IPO had Wall Street buzzing when Groupon first filed its plans in early June because of the company's sizzling growth rate. But interest as waned amid doubts about Groupon's accounting, leadership and ability to maintain its lead in a market now drowning in daily deals.
After drastically restating its revenue last week, Groupon signaled it still intends to complete an IPO that aims to raise up to $750 million. The company, which is based in Chicago, hasn't specified a timetable for pricing the IPO, but analysts now expect it to occur within the next month, unless the already shaky stock market gets even rockier.
If Groupon's new program works like company envisions, consumers who spend enough money to qualify for the reward would receive an 80 percent discount instead of the 50 percent markdown frequently given on its daily deals. For example, someone who spent $100 with a hair stylist might only need to spend another $20 to get the next $100 in service.
Merchants will have the final say on the size of the discounts.

On average, Symantec blocked 94 targeted attacks each day during the month of November, with at least one attack blocked in the U.S. every day. The public sector saw more than 20 of those targeted attacks, followed closely by the chemical and pharmaceutical industry with an average 18.6. The manufacturing sector ranked third with 13.6 a day. Many of the chemical and pharmaceutical industry attacks surfaced later in the year, and fit the Nitro profile.
"While the amount of global spam is at its lowest level since the McColo take-down in November 2008, the latest Symantec intelligence report shows a fourfold increase in the number of daily targeted attacks since January 2011," said Paul Wood, senior intelligence analyst at Symantec. "This is the greatest increase over a 12-month period ever recorded by Symantec."
Serious Damage Possible
Wood went on to explain that the aim of these targeted attacks is to establish persistent access to the targeted organization's network, in many cases with the aim of providing remote access to confidential data. In his assessment, these attacks have the potential to cause serious damage to an organization and in the long term represent a significant threat against the economic prosperity of many countries.
"Many attacks include elements of social engineering and are based on information we make available ourselves through social networking and social-media sites," Wood said. "Once the attackers are able to understand our interests or hobbies, with whom we socialize and who else may be in our networks, they are often able to construct more believable and convincing attacks against us."
Good News, Bad News
As Wood mentioned, there's good news on the spam front. Consumers continue to look for ways to save but don't want to skimp on gifts, which is why they gravitate toward the savings and personalized experiences daily deals provide, says Graham Jones at daily-deals aggregator PriceGrabber.
He says that when shoppers buy a voucher for $25 that gives them a value of $50, everyone wins. "The savings goes to the gift giver. The value goes to the gift receiver," Jones says.
Starting on Cyber Monday, LivingSocial will offer deals including a voucher for half off on wine at Wine.com. Gilt City, the location-specific arm of daily-deals site Gilt, will offer holiday deals that cater to specific categories, such as a reduced-price basket of beauty products for the "beauty maven" in your life.
"Every year, people are wanting to customize their gifts more and more, just as the world becomes more customizable," says Cameron Glass, a retail strategist at consulting firm Kurt Salmon. She says daily deals are "a way to give interesting gifts that stay on budget."
Almost 60% of consumers plan to use daily-deals sites to shop for gifts this year, a PriceGrabber analysis of 2,322 online shoppers found. LivingSocial says more than half of 3,500 respondents said they think they may receive a daily deal as a gift.
Glass chalks those numbers up to the fact that consumers are gaining more confidence and savvy in making online purchases.
Similarly, shoppers are attracted to Gilt City because they have become more sophisticated, President Nathan Richardson says.
Daisy Johnson of Manassas, Va., says she plans to take advantage of daily deals "if the right ones come my way."
