Ex-FBI Cyber Cop Joins Network Security Firm

The FBI's former top cyber cop has taken a job with a startup company to help protect private-sector computer networks that he says are already under constant attack with intrusions. Shawn Henry recently left the FBI after more than 20 years with the bureau. He said he decided to work at California-based CrowdStrike to fill a void in protecting private sector networks. The federal government is responsible for protecting military and government networks, but there is no one -- except CrowdStrike's business rivals -- charged with protecting the private sector dot-com domain, Henry said. "The government's not doing anything, that's the problem," Henry said in an interview with The Associated Press. "There's no authority for the government to monitor the traffic in the dot-com space." In his role as the executive assistant director of the criminal, cyber, response and service branch of the FBI, Henry said he saw intelligence about private networks constantly under attack. "Every single private sector entity that has any intellectual property, any (research and development), that has any type of business" is either currently being probed by people who shouldn't have access to the information or will soon be breached," Henry said. "That's absolutely happening." CrowdStrike was founded by George Kurtz, the former chief executive officer of Foundstone, which was acquired by McAfee, a computer security company. Congress is considering several proposals to enhance the security of cyber networks. Proposals would bolster the government's ability to regulate the computer security of companies that run critical industries. The bills are designed to boost cyber security against the constant attacks that target U.S. government, corporate and personal computer networks and accounts. Authorities are increasingly worried that cybercriminals are trying to take over systems that control the inner workings of water, electrical, nuclear or other power plants. newsfactor.com »

No. 1 IT Security Worry: 'Hacktivists' Like Anonymous

What is the No. 1 security worry for IT professionals? According to a new report, it's "hacktivists" from Anonymous. The new survey by security firm Bit9, titled 2012 Cyber Security Research, finds that cyber-criminals and nation-states take second and third place among the top three worries. The survey queried nearly 2,000 IT security experts in the U.S. and Europe about the current state of enterprise security. China, Russia Sixty-one percent of those surveyed said Anonymous and other hacktivist groups are most likely to target their organizations, with 55 percent believing that cyber-criminals will hit them and 48 percent fearing attacks by nation states. The report found that 64 percent of respondents expect their organization to be the target of a cyber-attack within the next six months. Among those that fear nation-states, China is the main concern, followed by Russia. Harry Sverdlove, Bit9's chief technology officer, said in a statement that the survey "highlights how the quickly changing criminal landscape is impacting IT professionals worldwide." An overwhelming 74 percent of respondents believe that their security measures on employees' machines are not doing enough to protect against these threats. But, while endpoints -- laptops and desktops -- are considered the weakest link, 40 percent of respondents felt that infrastructure servers had the most effective security and 36 percent felt that way about file servers -- in spite of the fact that servers are frequent targets. Role of Employees Disgruntled employees, long considered a security threat, are seen by only 28 percent as a concern for their companies. Fifty-eight percent said implementation of best practices and better security policies are the best ways to improve security in the enterprise, and 19 percent said individual employees could play "an important role" in improving security. Forty-five percent see malware as the main attack method, including Trojans and rootkits, while 17 percent are most... newsfactor.com »

Cyberattacks Need High-Level Approval

The United States would use cyber weapons against an adversary's computer networks only after officials at the highest levels of government approved of the operation because of the risks of collateral damage, a senior U.S. military official said Tuesday. The director of intelligence at U.S. Cyber Command, Rear Adm. Samuel Cox, said that cyberattacks can do significant harm to a country's infrastructure and should never be carried out in a cavalier manner. Offensive cyber operations are difficult to conduct with precision to avoid unintended casualties and damage to unrelated systems, he said. "If you're trying to do precision strike in cyberspace with a very high degree of confidence," Cox said, "that takes enormous amounts of intelligence, planning, great care and very carefully crafted cyber tools that won't boomerang against you down the road." Cox also downplayed the prospect that an enemy of the United States could completely disable the nation's electric power grid or shut down the Internet because these systems are designed to withstand severe cyberattacks. "There's huge amounts of resiliency and redundancy built into the system nowadays that makes that kind of catastrophic thing very difficult," he said. Cyber Command is in charge of defending U.S. military networks from attacks and intrusions. The command's top officer, Army Gen. Keith Alexander, also is the director of the secretive National Security Agency, which gathers electronic intelligence from foreign governments. Both NSA and Cyber Command are headquartered at Fort Meade, Md. The Defense Department is developing rules of engagement for how commanders will operate in cyberspace and what missions they can conduct under their own authority. During congressional testimony last month, Alexander said decisions on how to respond to adversaries in cyberspace would be made by the president and secretary of defense. But military commanders would have authority if circumstances demanded immediate action. "Our job would be to defend... newsfactor.com »

U.S. Natural Gas Sector Hit by Coordinated Cyber Attacks

The U.S. government is moving quickly to respond to an ongoing series of cyber attacks on companies in the natural gas pipeline sector, according to the Industrial Control Systems Cyber Emergency Response Team, or ICS-CERT, at the Department of Homeland Security. In a daily report released Tuesday, DHS reported that the coordinated cyber intrusions targeting natural gas companies began in December last year and have continued for the past five months. "Analysis of the malware and artifacts associated with these cyber attacks has positively identified this activity as related to a single campaign," ICS-CERT noted earlier this month. These cyber attacks are being launched through the use of so-called spear-phishing attempts, which specifically target individuals within a company or organization. Phishing attacks generally involve e-mail spoofing or instant messaging activities that direct users to a fake online destination masquerading as a legitimate Web site, where the victims are asked to submit additional data. With respect to the ongoing attacks on private natural gas companies, ICS-CERT noted that the number of persons targeted appears to be tightly focused. "In addition, the e-mails have been convincingly crafted to appear as though they were sent from a trusted member internal to the organization," ICS-CERT explained in a statement. A Coordinated Response ICS-CERT has asked all private companies operating natural gas facilities to submit the requisite data for identifying the scope of the infection as well as for developing a plan for mitigating the damage and eradicating the threat from the infected networks. According to the U.S. industry publication Natural Gas Intelligence, Obama administration officials and Senate staff met Monday to discuss the ongoing threat to the nation's energy production infrastructure. "DHS is coordinating with the FBI and appropriate federal agencies, and ICS-CERT is working with affected organizations to prepare mitigation plans customized to their current network and security... newsfactor.com »
