Report: Google Treading Into Amazon's E-Commerce Waters

Never content to rest on its search-engine dominance alone, Google is reportedly moving into yet another industry giant's space. This time, it's Amazon that may have to look over its shoulder. The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Google plans to challenge the throne of the e-commerce legend, which has itself branched out into manufacturing products. Google is reportedly in talks with major retailers and shippers about developing a new service that would let consumers shop for clothes, electronics and other consumer goods online and get their order within a day. Google's move is a direct assault against one of Amazon's competitive advantages: Amazon Prime. Amazon Prime is a membership program that gives Amazon customers unlimited fast shipping, such as free two-day shipping and one-day shipping for $3.99 per item. The annual fee is $79. What Would Amazon Do? "The fact that Google is getting in on the retail and shipping business is an indicator that it's a service people are willing to pay for but it's also something that they expect," said Charles King, principal analyst at Pund-IT. "Offering to deliver goods within a day keeps Google in the ballpark as a direct competitor with Amazon, but it also brings up the subject of what is Amazon doing next to stay ahead of the game." King makes a valid point. In the early days of e-commerce, Amazon differentiated itself by offering lower prices than bookstores. Amazon later aggregated similar products from various sellers and allowed consumers to choose from various price options. Amazon also gained market advantages with one-click shopping, which allows customers to make online purchases with a single click. "As more retailers got on the bandwagon, you saw Amazon making some interesting moves in order to stay ahead of the pack. First they offered Super Saver free shipping and then later the offered... newsfactor.com »

IBM Exec Offers Inside Look at Smarter Commerce Acquisitions

In its latest bet to forward its Smarter Commerce initiative, IBM snapped up Emptoris. The company bolsters the procurement and supply chain operations side of Big Blue's analytics business. Emptoris is the second cloud analytics acquisition IBM has made in as many weeks. Big Blue bought DemandTec last week. The back-to-back deals demonstrate IBM's commitment to Smarter Commerce, which the company has pegged as a $20 billion market opportunity in software alone. Smarter Commerce aims to help organizations that are struggling to meet the demands of rapidly shifting buying patterns in the era of mobile and social networks. "If you remember the four P's -- product, price, promotion and placement -- Emptoris fits on the product side to manage the supply network and source products very efficiently," said Craig Hayman, general manager of Industry Solutions at IBM. "With Emptoris, you can put out a bid for laptops, for example, and have suppliers compete for that business. That often leads to better quality or better terms and conditions, and you can do it very rapidly." Delivering Value With more than 350 customers in 75 countries, Emptoris has global clients that span multiple industries, including consumer products, financial services, healthcare, telecommunications, chemical, oil and gas, utilities, construction and industrial manufacturing. "Procurement is being asked to show how it can deliver value to the organization," Hayman said. "Adding Emptoris strengthens the comprehensive capabilities we deliver and enables IBM to meet the specific needs of chief procurement officers." Emptoris' spend-management solutions complement the existing B2B integration and supply chain management capabilities IBM acquired through the purchase of Sterling Commerce in 2010. The Emptoris acquisition will allow IBM to deliver more solutions focused on the needs of sourcing and procurement professionals. Rounding Out the Four P's Hayman said IBM's acquisition of DemandTec last week fills the pricing aspect of the four Ps. DemandTec... newsfactor.com »

Survey: E-Commerce Customers Generally Satisfied

Netflix customers were cranky for much of the year, but online shoppers in general are a contented bunch, according to an annual customer satisfaction survey. The customer satisfaction score of the embattled video rental company fell 14% in the last year, says the American Customer Satisfaction Index's annual e-Commerce report released today. It's one of the largest drops in the index's history. The index, founded at the University of Michigan but now run as a privately held company, measures customer evaluations of products and services for 225 companies in 47 industries in the U.S., based on a 100-point scale. Customer satisfaction with e-commerce Web sites inched up 1% to 80.1. "Consumer expectation continues to increase" for e-commerce companies, says Larry Freed, author of the report and CEO of consulting firm ForeSee. However, "When you walk into a retail store, you don't expect to get better service," he says. Total e-commerce sales rose 16% to $194.3 billion in 2011, say data from the U.S. Census Bureau. Amazon remains the top online retailer in customer service, though its overall score dropped slightly. The company invests heavily in subsidizing the cost of shipping and new technology, such as its e-readers, to keep consumer prices low. "It's the gold standard for e-commerce in many different ways," says Sucharita Mulpuru, an analyst at Forrester Research. Netflix's score reflects the turbulent changes it introduced last year by raising prices and announcing a plan, which it eventually dropped, to split its DVD and streaming rental services. "Netflix shot themselves in the foot," Mulpuru says. Newegg, an online retailer that specializes in electronics, registered the fastest rate of growth in satisfaction scores. Online travel agencies' average score, at 78, was slightly lower than retailers. But the sluggish economy has unleashed a flood of deals and new Web features to attract more customers, says Douglas Quinby of... newsfactor.com »
