Japanese researchers have invented a device that's as useful as it is scary. When pointed directly at a person it records his or her words and in microseconds shoots them back so fast that it causes brain freeze, producing an artificial stutter.
Talk about your own words coming back to hurt you.
The prototype looks like a radar gun used by police to trap speeders, but with a laser pointer, directional microphone and a distance sensor. It's effective within about 98 feet. Its inventors suggest it could be used to block hecklers or microphone hogs at events, or people who are nuisances in public places.
"Fair discussions are essential for resolving conflicts," writes Koji Tsukada of Ochanomizu University in Tokyo in his research paper on the Speech Jammer, which was published by arXiv.org, an e-print service run by Cornell University for articles on science and mathematics.
"We have to establish and obey rules for proper turn-taking when speaking," Tsukada said. However, some people tend to lengthen their turns or deliberately interrupt other people...."
Tsukada proposes the device could be used as a turn-taking controller, in which the signal would be directed at noisy people via microphone and speakers, or as a "portable speech-jamming" gun, in which the signal is directed through the air directly from the device.

| Here's one way to sum up 2011: I added 71 people as Facebook friends, shared 26 links and commented on 98 of my friends' status updates. I was tagged in 33 photos and added 18 of my own to the site.
I also attempted to keep up with Facebook's endless redesigns, most recently with the introduction of Timeline. With it, your Facebook profile offers highlights from your past, not just your recent happenings. Last week, I urged all of you to carefully curate your Timelines to avoid coming across as vain or revealing forgotten skeletons.
This week, I will go through other ways to manage your life on Facebook.
It's good to take stock of your Facebook presence from time to time, given how quickly the site changes its features and settings and how easily many of us add people to our lists of friends. Even if you haven't switched to Timeline yet, you can still follow these steps to review what you're really revealing about yourself.
Who Are Your Friends?
In the early days, I was very judicious about whom I accepted as Facebook friends. People I hadn't met in person, relatives I hadn't spoken to in years and friends who simply annoyed me didn't make the cut. Now, my friends list includes people I haven't been in touch with since college and others I met only once at a party, wedding or trip.
Do all of them need to know -- or even care -- that I started watching "How I Met Your Mother" or ate an undercooked hot dog at 3 a.m.? Should they see photos of me at a recent holiday bash?

The Sun Microsystems founder was about to officially launch his new venture, called Wayin, a service built around instant interactive poll-type questions and companion photos posted by consumers who share them with friends and followers.
Wayin has a strong mobile component, with apps for Apple iOS and Google-based Android devices. And a heavy emphasis on marketing opportunities and partnerships.
I didn't get to weigh in on Wayin that night. Since then, though, I've talked to McNealy and played with the service a bit. It's kind of fun and surprisingly addictive, though some questions are more lame than others. Indeed, consumer poll questions are all over the map, but the early emphasis seems to tilt toward sports, celebrities, fashion and politics.
Don't expect long-winded answers, or the kind of thoughtful exchanges you might engage in on the Quora question-and-answer site. On Wayin, the limit is four or fewer possible multiple-choice responses:
Who will have the bigger comeback in 2012? Tiger Woods or Peyton Manning?
Preferred book-reading modes? Physical book, iPad or Kindle/Nook?
What do you do when your meal order is incorrect? Ask (nicely) for a new meal, make a scene with the server, be silent and eat it anyway or leave a note and a lousy tip?
Typically, there's an actual poll question next to a picture: "Should Ryan Braun lose his 2011 MVP award?" shows up underneath a photo of the Milwaukee Brewers ballplayer who reportedly failed drug tests. But sometimes you're asked to react to a picture itself -- giving a thumbs up or down, say, to a scenic image.

| Retailers are so desperate this holiday season that they're willing to lose money to get you to spend yours.
Take online jeweler Stauer. It's offering a $249 amethyst necklace for free -- provided customers pay the $24.95 it costs to ship it. Stauer will lose money on the deal, but it hopes to reel in new customers who will buy other jewelry.
"In this economy, you have to be outrageous in your offers," said Michael Bisceglia, the president of Stauer who found that more than a third of customers who took advantage of a similar deal on a $179 pearl necklace in 2009 bought additional items. "You have to shake up the world a bit."
Not every retailer will go as far as giving away merchandise during the holidays, but many will offer profit-busting incentives. It's a critical time of year for merchants, which can make up to 40 percent of their annual revenue in November and December. And they're so worried that Americans are spooked by the weak economy that they're willing to sacrifice profit for sales.
Nordstrom, for instance, is one of the first retailers to offer free shipping on most orders, no matter how small, even though it could wind up paying $3 to ship a $7 pair of socks. Furniture chain Raymour & Flanigan is allowing customers to go four years without paying interest on their purchases -- the longest period it has ever offered -- even though it will have to help cover a chunk of those charges itself. And Sears is not only offering to match the cheapest prices customers find online, but the department store chain is giving them an additional 10 percent off the difference.

| Users of the coming Windows 8 operating system will be able to switch between a traditional desktop PC user interface and a tablet-friendly look patterned after Microsoft's Windows Phone platform.
Some industry observers clearly have been worried about the dumbing down of the next Windows OS release. However, users who highly value the full-blown desktop experience will have the full set of PC capabilities at their fingertips, said Steven Sinofsky, the president of Microsoft's Windows division, writing in a blog.
"If you want to, you can seamlessly switch between Metro style apps and the improved Windows desktop," Sinofsky wrote. "Essentially, you can think of the Windows desktop as just another app."
Windows 8 tablet users who prefer Windows Phone's Metro-style UI for accomplishing tasks on the fly will never even need to see the platform's desktop version.
"We won't even load it -- literally the code will not be loaded -- unless you explicitly choose to go there," Sinofsky said.
Moreover, the new Metro-style UI "is much more than the visual design -- [it is] fast and fluid, immersive, beautiful, and app-centric," Sinofsky said. And tablet users who do not need the full-blown Windows desktop experience won't have to comply with its more stringent memory, battery life and hardware requirements, he added.
The Innovator's Dilemma
Microsoft has to negotiate an innovator's dilemma with Windows 8, said Al Hilwa, director of applications software development at IDC.
"They have to create a product which is appealing to an apparently large segment of the user population who loves a simpler touch-first approach to computing, while maintaining Window's existing user-base that is comfortable with the precise control a keyboard, a mouse and a file-oriented interface provides," Hilwa said.

I know many people who are dead against buying items on sites such as eBay, and I can understand why they feel like they do. While smartphone users worry about mobile hacking and other security threats that are making news these days, psychologists and others are concerned about another equally troubling issue: the growing obsession among people who would much rather interact with their smartphones than with other human beings.
"Watching people who get their first smartphone, there's a very quick progression from having a basic phone you don't talk about to people who love their iPhone, name their phone and buy their phones outfits," said Lisa Merlo, director of psychotherapy training at the University of Florida.
The increasing dependence comes as more Americans ditch their iPods, cameras, maps and address books in favor of the myriad capabilities of a smartphone. After all, companies have rolled out thousands of applications that do everything from track your heart rate to guide you through the streets of New York City. While smartphones have made life easier for some, psychologists say the love of them is becoming more like an addiction, creating consequences that range from minor (teenagers who communicate in three-letter acronyms like LOL and BRB) to major (car accidents caused by people who text while driving).
Merlo, a clinical psychologist, said she's observed a number of behaviors among smartphone users that she labels "problematic." Among them, Merlo says some patients pretend to talk on the phone or fiddle with apps to avoid eye contact or other interactions at a bar or a party. Others are so genuinely engrossed in their phones that they ignore the people around them completely.

In case you aren't familiar with the technologies, Google calls them Don't Forget Bob and Got the Wrong Bob? The Gmail features aim to help prevent you from forgetting to include someone on an e-mail and sending the message to the wrong person with a similar name. Gmail engineers have identified these issues as two common mistakes.
"We've received quite a bit of positive feedback from people who avoided some embarrassing situations thanks to these features," says Assaf Ben-David, a software engineering intern at Google. He said the new features should start working in all Gmail accounts over the next day or so.
Remember the Right Bob
The Don't Forget Bob technology works to suggest more recipients. The tool aims at people who either mistakenly left someone important out of an e-mail or just spend too much time trying to decide who to include. If you turn on the feature, you'll see suggested recipients when you pen an e-mail.
"Gmail will suggest people you might want to include based on the groups of people you e-mail most often," Ari Leichtberg, a software engineer at Google, explained when the technology was first developed in Google Labs more than a year ago. "So if you always e-mail your mom, dad and sister together, and you start composing a message to your mom and dad, Gmail will suggest adding your sister."
