Facebook Says Tools Can Promote Small Businesses

With more than 500 million members, Facebook is hugely attractive to small businesses as a place to market their wares. But tips on how small businesses can best work with Facebook tools are buried within the site, leaving many entrepreneurs puzzled about how to use the site to get new clients and strengthen the loyalty of existing customers. How frequently should a business communicate with its customers? And what is the significance of that "Like" button anyway? For answers to those questions and more, USA TODAY recently paid a visit to Emily White, Facebook's director of Local, who works with businesses on Facebook tools. White was interviewed in a conference room at Facebook headquarters here, where her shiny Apple MacBook laptop was adorned with a "Like Us on Facebook" sticker that the company gives to businesses. Q: Let's start off by talking "Likes." There is such an emphasis now by companies on getting customers to "like" them, by clicking the "Like" tab on Facebook. Why are likes such a big deal? A: A "like" is an endorsement, a lightweight action that allows a user to say "I like what you're doing in this area; I like your product; I like your photo; and I want to put in a vote for you." It's a way for your customer to say, "I like this business, and I'm going to tell everyone about it." Q: Competition for "likes" has gotten so heated that many companies are actually offering to sell "likes," by paying folks to hit the "like" button over and over again. How does Facebook feel about that? A: We're not fans. They're disingenuous and don't mean anything. If that page is publishing to an individual's profile, they'll start marking it as spam. You want a genuine "like." You want someone to "like" your business because they really do. Q:... newsfactor.com »

'Massive Power Shift' Seen as Intermediaries Control Online News Flow

The New York Times, Time Magazine and Fox News are still important -- but not as important as Google, Facebook and Twitter. Those "technology intermediaries" are gaining unprecedented control of how the public consumes news, according to this year's State of New Media Report from the Pew Research Center for Excellence in Journalism. More News On-the-Go The study found that more people than ever picked up mobile devices in 2011. Four in 10 now own a smartphone and 1 in 5 own a tablet. That new ability to consume news on-the-go has led to greater engagement with traditional media agencies like newspapers and TV networks, "strengthening the lure of traditional news brands and providing a boost to long-form journalism. Eight in 10 who get news on smartphones or tablets, for instance, get news on conventional computers as well," said report authors Amy Mitchell and Tom Rosenstiel. But in order to maintain their connection with users of major technology platforms like Facebook, Apple's iPhone and iPad or Android phones, media companies must continually invest in optimizing their content. The biggest challenge, though, is monetizing their digital content. Last year five technology companies grabbed up 68 percent of all online advertising and about half of all display ad revenue, and Facebook in particular is believed to be on the verge of controlling 20 percent of online advertising by 2015. Technology analyst Rob Enderle sees a dark side in this online growth. "The big hidden problem is the selective control of information," he said. "While we have been concerned in the past about [monopolies by] massive news organizations like Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. that could become the power behind the governments, increasingly tech companies like Google and Facebook are gaining this control." Selective information or focus, he said, "could lead to media-controlled governments....Too much power can lead to serious... newsfactor.com »

Facebook's Newest Features Explained

When Facebook revamped many of its most heavily used features last month, millions of users were unhappy. For days, the hashtag #newFacebook on Twitter was a litany of complaints: The new features were too busy, too complicated, too un-Facebook. But the changes -- which CEO Mark Zuckerberg and the Facebook brain trust see as the most important since the addition of games and other software apps in 2007 -- aren't going away. Perhaps the biggest innovation, a new feature called "Timeline" that Zuckerberg calls "the story of your life," isn't even officially available yet. This guide is an attempt to demystify Facebook's most important new functions -- those you can see now, like "Ticker" and "Lists," and those you're about to get access to, like Timeline. Ticker Facebook is taking the main feature people used to keep up with the activities of their friends on the social network, and splitting it into two: Ticker and News Feed. The significant addition is "Ticker," a virtually unfiltered, automatically updating stream of the actions of your friends. Ticker, which scrolls down the upper right side of the home page, is supposed to provide a real-time sense of what your friends, and the brands and businesses you like, are doing at any given moment. By clicking a Ticker item, you can instantly join in -- from sending a Happy Birthday wish, to friending someone your friend is friending, to listening to the new Wilco album through the Spotify app. News Feed The stream of "Stories" that run down the center of the home page, is still there, but it has been changed. Since it was launched five years ago, News Feed has been a primary way that people keep track of their friends. "News Feed is the lifeblood of Facebook," said Meredith Chin, a senior communications manager for the company. You used to be... newsfactor.com »

Hangouts and Circles: User Tips for Google+

With Google+, Internet search giant Google has launched a clear competitor to Facebook, which, until now, has been largely unchallenged in the domain of social networking. Users will find plenty of similarities between the two, but also some key differences. Google's goal is to make online networking more personal. That means a video chat function that lets multiple people talk at once. It has taken great efforts to make its social network appear roomy. Everything seems well thought through. Of course, the question now becomes: if you go to Google+, will your friends be there, or will the circles you create there remain empty? Just like with Facebook, Google+ revolves around a ticker where the newest posts by your contacts can be viewed. On Google+, its called Stream, meandering through the middle of the screen as it displays photos, videos, links and commentary. If you see something you like, you can attach your own commentary by clicking the "+1" button, Google+'s answer to Facebook's "like" function. Doing so can launch a torrent of gossip or even a serious discussion. With Facebook, those two possibilities often get hopelessly intermingled: Think of all the cases where questionable party photos have been made available to the wrong people, like potential employers. Google hopes to solve this problem by allowing users to selectively decide who sees which commentary. Other users are not automatically labelled as friends, but have to be placed into circles, with separate groups for friends, family and acquaintances. And here, friend means an actual friends. People do not have the option to see in which circles you've placed them. Thus, every time a person posts something to Google+, they specify which circles can access the news: whether it's just family, or the members of a tennis club, or all contacts. As a pleasant side-effect, this makes it easier... newsfactor.com »

Facebook Unveils Ability To 'Subscribe To Non-Friends

Facebook just got a little bit more like Twitter. The social-media giant this week launched a subscription feature that lets non-friends follow you, a move that may once again draw the ire of privacy watchdogs. Zach Rait at Facebook set up the introduction by posing what the company sees as a frustrating problem for its members: It hasn't been easy to choose exactly what you see in your News Feed. Facebook aims to change all that with its new Subscribe button. In the coming days, you'll start seeing the Subscribe button in Facebook profiles. You can use it in one of three ways: to choose what you see from people in News Feed, to hear from people, even if you're not friends, and to let people hear from you, even if you're not friends. "The subscribe feature is like the follow button in Twitter. It's part of a larger effort to accelerate feature upgrades or address complaints in response to competition and specifically Google Plus," said Greg Sterling, principal analyst at Sterling Market Intelligence. "They're trying to address any and all reasons users might have for finding fault or deficiency with Facebook. Some of the recent changes are long-standing 'white board' issues. Others are more direct responses to features in Google Plus." Decluttering Facebook The first option lets you declutter your News Feed. You can choose to see everything your friend posts, most updates, or only important updates, like a new job or a move. You can also decide what types of updates you see. "Maybe you don't want to see every time your brother plays a game on Facebook, for example. Or maybe you'd like to see more stories from your best friends, and fewer from your coworkers," Rait said. "You also couldn't hear directly from people you're interested in but don't know... newsfactor.com »

German Privacy Watchdog Dislikes Facebook's Like

A German data protection authority is "unliking" Facebook's "Like" button. The state of Schleswig-Holstein's data protection commissioner, Thilo Weichert, on Friday ordered state institutions to shut down the fan pages on the social networking site and remove the "Like" button from their Web sites, saying it leads to profiling that violates German and European law. Facebook insisted Friday that is in full compliance with European data protection laws. On Friday, Weichert issued a statement saying technical analysis by his office shows Facebook violated German and European data protection laws by passing content data to the social network's servers in the U.S. "Whoever visits facebook.com or uses a plug-in must expect that he or she will be tracked by the company for two years," Weichert said. "Facebook builds a broad individual and for members even a personalized profile." A Facebook spokesman conceded that the company can see "information such as the IP address" of users who visit a site with a "Like" button. "We delete this technical data within 90 days," said the spokesman, who did not give his name in keeping with company policy. "That is in keeping with normal industry standards." Weichert's office ordered Web site owners in Schleswig-Holstein to "immediately stop the passing on of user data to Facebook in the USA by deactivating the respective services" and threatened to take legal action if they fail to comply. He also urged Internet users in general to "keep their fingers from clicking on social plug-ins" and "not set up a Facebook account" to avoid being profiled. The keepers of Germany's strict privacy laws have repeatedly clashed on issues of privacy with international Internet giants, such as Facebook and Google -- often with success. Last year Google allowed Germans who opposed its Street View mapping system to blur images of their homes, while Facebook in January granted members more... newsfactor.com »

Steer Away from Facebook Job Apps

There's a new job-hunting fad creeping into Facebook pages. And it looks tacky. You might have come across a Facebook app called BranchOut. There's also a lesser-known one called BeKnown, created by job site Monster.com. Both are designed to compete with LinkedIn, acting as a tool for job seekers and head hunters to connect through Facebook accounts. Users post their resume, give recommendations and see job postings. All research points to this being a great new tool to embrace: Facebook is the largest social network, with more than 160 million U.S. users in June, according to Internet research company ComScore. With numbers like that, surely Facebook is efficient for finding a connection for that dream job. (If you were wondering, LinkedIn is No. 2 in the United States, with 33.9 million visitors in June.) And social media is a must-do for job hunting these days: Some 89 percent of companies plan to recruit through social media this year, with 64 percent saying they actually hired through social networks in 2011, according to a July survey from online recruiting software provider Jobvite. Problem is, you can unintentionally look like a social media imbecile using a Facebook app like BranchOut or BeKnown. Both apps treat connections like a game, awarding you with meaningless badges and ribbons for sending invites to friends. I was rewarded with being a Diamond Super Connector on BranchOut for doing absolutely nothing, but I was encouraged to level up to Double Diamond Ribbon by adding 15 friends. That's right, you get points for harassing friends to join an app, polluting their newsfeed and wall with the app logo. (Farmville, anyone? A professional network shouldn't stoop to the same level as a Mafia Wars game for engagement.) On BeKnown, I checked the option to not post that I joined, yet the app did so... newsfactor.com »

A New Social Network from Google Targets Facebook

Google just threw down the gauntlet in Facebook's social backyard. The search giant has finally done what many were betting on: Launched a social network. Dubbed Google+, the social network looks somewhat like Facebook, with feeds of photos, messages, comments and updates from friends. The Google service also taps into other products like Google Maps. In the announcement, Vic Gundotra, senior vice president of engineering at Google, blew proverbial smoke in the face of Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg with an assertion that online sharing is awkward, even broken. Google, he said, aims to fix it with the Google+ project. Your Inner Circle "Not all relationships are created equal. So in life we share one thing with college buddies, another with parents, and almost nothing with our boss," Gundotra said. "The problem is that today's online services turn friendship into fast food -- wrapping everyone in 'friend' paper -- and sharing really suffers." He said sharing on today's social networks is sloppy, scary and insensitive. Google's answer is to let you share selectively within specific circles, such as family, coworkers, or best friends. In the software, a user just makes a circle, adds people, and shares with only them. One Google+ feature is Sparks, an online sharing engine that delivers a feed of what Gundotra calls "highly contagious content" from across the Internet on any topic in more than 40 languages. Users can add their interests and watch, read and share content within any circle of friends. A feature called Hangouts combines the casual meet-up with a live multi-person video. Huddle Up No Google social network would be complete without a mobile component. A feature called Mobile lets users share what's around, right now, via a mobile phone. Google+ can add your location to every post if you'd like, or leave it off if you prefer to... newsfactor.com »

LikePlusOne.org - Like Things On Facebook And Google

Available for Firefox, Chrome, Safari, and IE9, Like+1 does something that by most reckonings is a top service: melding together Facebook likes and Google +1s. This browser extension takes the two of them and (to all intents and purposes) turns them into the very same thing. So, not being exactly sure how much of an advantage clicking on a +1 button will bring you should stop being a grey area, or even a point of contention - there are many that are already questioning the overall usefulness of the whole +1 service.

Like! в Facebook иногда берет неверную картинку из записи (выбирает случайную), так что не удивляйтесь странным иконкам. Мы поправим это в следующем апдейте;
Obama's Facebook Town Hall Sets the Stage for 2012

President Obama knows social media. As the 2012 campaign season gets under way, the president is gearing up to attract new Internet friends. On Wednesday Obama held a Facebook Town Hall meeting at Facebook headquarters in Palo Alto, Calif. The event was occasion enough to get Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg to wear a suit and tie. The first question came from Zuckerberg himself. He asked the president about his thoughts on balancing the budget. "In the short term, Democrats and Republicans now agree we've got to reduce the debt by about $4 trillion over the next 10 years. And I know that sounds like a lot of money -- it is. But it's doable if we do it in a balanced way," Obama said. Obama Likes Hoodie As the meeting proceeded, Obama took questions from people watching Facebook live about the housing crisis, a Facebook employee about job recovery, and several others. At the conclusion of the town hall, Zuckerberg presented Obama with a hoodie -- the hallmark of his wardrobe. Obama replied, "This is a high-fashion statement right here. This is beautiful." The lighthearted back-and-forth between Obama and Zuckerberg allowed the president to show off his personality, much like in the days of his appearance on shows like Ellen, where he danced onto the set. That's important in today's political climate, according to Charles King, principal analyst at Pund-IT. "The political tone, especially at the national level, but certainly at state and local government levels, has become so increasingly strident," King said. "It's good for politicians to put themselves in positions where they can be people instead of mouthpieces for whatever special-interest group they happen to be representing." Social Media Smash Hit? But how important will social media be in the 2012 presidential election? That remains to be seen -- but it looks like the Obama... newsfactor.com »
