Barnes & Noble opened a new front in the media tablet war on Tuesday with a President's Week rollout of its latest Nook device.
The 7-inch, $199 Nook Tablet has half the internal storage of the last Nook Tablet, 8 GB instead of 16 GB, but costs $50 less. Otherwise the specifications are the same: It's powered by a 1 GHz dual-core processor, with a slot for up to a 32 GB of memory on a microSD card, and Barnes & Noble says the battery is good for 11-1/2 hours of reading time or nine hours of video playback.
Cheaper Nook Color
"For any customer who likes to read digitally, watch movies or TV shows, browse the Web, or help their kids read and learn through interactive books and apps, our new $199 NOOK Tablet with 8 GB is the best product value on the market," said Barnes & Noble CEO William Lynch.
At the same time, Barnes & Noble, struggling to make headway against Apple's market-topping iPad (which starts at $499) and Amazon.com's new Kindle Fire ($199), dropped the price of the Nook Color tablet from $199 to $169.
The Tablet weighs just 14.1 ounces, boasts VividView screen technology and has the ability to download thousands of Nook apps via Wi-Fi, as well as stream movies, TV and music from Netflix, Hulu Plus, Flixster, Pandora, Rhapsody and more.
The Nook Tablet is similar to the Kindle Fire. Neither is equipped with 3G wireless compatibility, like the iPad or a range of Android-based tablets, but connect via Wi-Fi only.
Avi Greengart, a consumer devices analyst for Current Analysis, says that in a match-up, the Kindle Fire and Nook each have advantages.
"In terms of hardware, the Nook is better, with a much better screen and a slightly better processor," Greengart said. "But the real difference... newsfactor.com » | Вслед за планшетом Amazon Kindle Fire , в умелых руках iFixit оказался его ближайший конкурент - Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet.
Kindle Fire.

Далее webplanet.ru » | Barnes & Noble will release a Nook Tablet on Monday that has twice the memory and storage of Amazon's coming Kindle Fire, according to new reports on the Web. The new tablet will be offered at $249, currently the price of the Nook Color, which is expected to drop in price below $200.
The new tablet could point to the further evolution of e-readers into mini-tablets. The Nook Tablet can build on the success of the Nook Color, which is now second in shipments to Apple's iPad 2.
Nov. 15 and 16
The Kindle Fire ships Nov. 15, and, according to the reports, the new Nook Tablet will ship the next day. The Nook Tablet will feature 1 GB of memory, compared with 512 MB for the Color and the Fire. It will also have 16 GB of storage, expandable to 32 GB, and will sport a 1.2 GHz dual-core processor, faster than the dual-core in the Fire and the single-core in the Color. The Color and the Fire each have 8 GB of storage.
Several weeks ago, Amazon unveiled its Kindle Fire tablet, which will sell for $199. Aside from the price and hardware differences, the Fire takes advantage of Amazon's cloud to speed up Web browsing, and is intended to be a playback device for Amazon's huge store of content. According to news reports, Amazon is selling the Kindle as a loss leader, under the price of manufacture, in order to move more content.
Amazon has also been actively working to build on its content advantage. On Thursday, it announced the Kindle Owners Lending Library, with thousands of book titles -- including more than 100 bestsellers -- available at no additional charge to Kindle-owning subscribers of Amazon Prime, which costs $79 annually and includes other benefits. Recently, the company also announced an arrangement... newsfactor.com » | Amazon.com's Kindle has been the eReader by which rival devices are measured. But the online retailer faces strong challenges on two fronts. One is coming from digital slates, notably Apple's iPad, and "reader tablets," such as Barnes & Noble's Nook Color. Compared with the black-and-gray-screened Kindles, such app-driven tablets offer color, sizzle and a lot more versatility.
Amazon is facing renewed competition on another flank, in the crowded space occupied by dedicated E Ink-type readers, a market Kindle energized upon its 2007 arrival. I've been reviewing two of the latest E Ink devices, the Kobo eReader Touch Edition, and -- yep them again -- the all-new (non-color) Nook from Barnes & Noble. Both provide good reads.
The new devices remind you that Kindle is due for a refresh, which seems likely relatively soon. Equal speculation: Amazon will deliver a color tablet in the not-too-distant future.
The cheapest Kindle costs $114 with ads. The ad-free Kobo and Nook devices cost about $130 and $139, respectively.
Unlike the Kindle, the latest Kobo and Nook devices are touch-screen based, a big plus. Gone are most of the clunky physical buttons for page turns and navigation. There's no physical keyboard, either (rarely used on the Kindle except to search for a book you might want to buy, or to type notes).
I'm a Kindle fan, but its various models have never been objects of physical beauty. And when you lay Kindle flat next to the noticeably smaller Kobo and Nook devices the Kindle keyboard adds length you can envision how a more compact Kindle with fewer buttons would be better looking and potentially more usable.
Indeed, when physical books were the only game in town, folks chose stuff to read based on the words on a page, not on how fast and easily those pages turned. The content of a... newsfactor.com » | When it was first released for the 2009 holiday season, Barnes & Noble's entry into the e-reader category, the nook, was widely panned as not ready for prime time or for taking on Amazon.com's Kindle. Now Consumer Reports and others are praising the newest nook as better than the Kindle -- the first time the Kindle hasn't been the top-scoring model.
On Friday, the nonprofit CR published a review of the new black-and-white nook Simple Touch Reader. It said the Simple Touch, which Barnes & Noble also calls The all-new nook, "matches or bests -- albeit modestly -- its Amazon competitor in almost every aspect of performance."
'Minimal Fuss'
The dramatic turnaround, according to CR, is due to Barnes & Noble "emulating Amazon's focus on reading with minimal fuss and extra features." While the first nook featured two screens, one in color for navigation, the Simple Touch drops the second screen to allow the user to concentrate on reading.
One edge for the nook, according to CR, is that it supports e-book loans from public libraries, although the Kindle is expected to offer similar support sometime this year.
Other observers are also noting that the newest nook is smaller and weighs less than the Kindle, two values that matter highly to readers on the go. Other new features include a single Home button a la Apple, an E Ink touchscreen, and easy-to-use social-sharing features via e-mail, Facebook or Twitter.
The e-reader category is a hot one, and Sony, among others, is expected to soon update its line. Additionally, the tablet category, dominated by Apple's iPad but with a variety of competitors, features e-book reading as a core function.
A key question for the future of the e-reader category is whether these one-trick ponies, designed only for reading, will be able to compete with tablets, notebooks or even... newsfactor.com » | Barnes & Noble unwrapped a new nook e-reader Tuesday that the giant book retailer is touting as an ultralight "simple touch reader" featuring extended battery life. Slated to begin shipping June 10, the new nook's black-and-white E Ink display minimizes screen flashing and reduces page-turn time by up to 80 percent compared to other e-readers.
With the new nook, Barnes & Noble's strategy is to attract price-conscious users looking for a device that is both simple to use and more versatile than previous products. Among other things, customers will be able to touch the device's screen to look up words, highlight passages, and adjust the font size and style. Also on tap is an on-screen keyboard that appears only when the user needs it to search for a key word or phrase.
"It's a coup for Barnes & Noble to beat Amazon to the touchscreen and at such a low price," said Forrester Research Vice President James McQuivey. "However, I think they're going to find that the simpler, cleaner look of the device is actually going to make people think it should cost less."
Countering Amazon
McQuivey had predicted Barnes & Noble's new nook would fill a niche at the low end of the retailer's nook lineup. "This will probably be a slimmer version of the E Ink nook, with some improvements in software, page-turn times, and user experience -- all at a cheaper price than before, closer to $129," McQuivey said in early May.
Barnes & Noble's latest move appears to be a direct response to Amazon's recent discount offerings of its lower-end Kindle devices -- the Kindle with Special Offers priced at $114 and the Kindle Wi-Fi priced at $139. However, McQuivey thinks the best countermove would be to bring down nook pricing even more.
