Cisco is battling against Microsoft's $8.5 billion Skype acquisition in the European Union's high court. Rather than trying to kill the acquisition itself, Cisco just wants to make sure Microsoft won't block other video conferencing services from interfacing with the platform.
Marthin De Beer, head of Cisco's video conferencing division, noted that the world remains some distance from the goal of video calls being as easy and ubiquitous as phone calls are today. He asked his blog readers to imagine how difficult it would be if they were limited to calling people who only use the same carrier or if their phone could only call certain brands.
"Cisco wants to avoid this future for video communications, and therefore today appealed the European Commission's approval of the Microsoft/Skype merger to the General Court of the European Union," De Beer said. Messagenet, a European VoIP service provider, joined Cisco in the appeal.
Insisting on Interoperability
De Beer was quick to mention that Cisco does not oppose the merger, but believes the European Commission should have placed conditions that would guarantee standards-based interoperability so that no single company can control the future of video communications.
"This appeal is about one thing only: securing standards-based interoperability in the video calling space," De Beer said. "Our goal is to make video calling as easy and seamless as e-mail is today. Making a video-to-video call should be as easy as dialing a phone number. Today, however, you can't make seamless video calls from one platform to another, much to the frustration of consumers and business users alike."
Cisco is calling for open standards in a move to accelerate innovation, create economic value, and increase choice for users of video communications, entertainment and services. This is critical, De Beer noted, because the world will be home to nearly 3 billion Internet users... newsfactor.com »

Cisco on Tuesday introduced innovations that aim to streamline collaboration in a post-PC era. From new Jabber options to an enhanced TelePresence system, Cisco is moving to optimize collaboration for the mobile world.
Cisco is extending its Jabber software to the iPad and Windows. Jabber is already available for Android, iOS, Mac, BlackBerry and Cisco Cius tablets. By adding Windows and iPad to the mix, consumers can tap into HD video, voice, presence, instant messaging, desktop sharing, conferencing and visual voicemail from almost any device.
Cisco is also expanding native integration between Jabber and TelePresence to give mobile users a way to initiate and connect to a TelePresence session no matter where they are. Meanwhile, Cisco launched TX9000, a three-screen immersive version of its TelePresence software with advanced collaboration capabilities that integrates with WebEx and is also interoperable with other vendors.
Cisco's Mobile-Video Play
"In a world that is increasingly mobile, social, visual and virtual, individuals are dictating how, when and where they communicate and collaborate inside and outside of the workplace," said OJ Winge, senior vice president and general manager, Collaboration Endpoints Technology Group at Cisco. Winge said Cisco is pushing the "any device to any device" reality.
Cisco is announcing all of these innovations against the backdrop of the rise of mobile video. According to Cisco's latest Visual Networking Index, globally, 3 trillion minutes or 6 million years of video content will cross the Internet each month in 2015. Global mobile data traffic will reach 10.8 exabytes per month, growing 18-fold from 2011 to 2016. By 2016, mobile video will represent 71 percent of all mobile data traffic.
Cisco Jabber releases for Windows and iPad can be used with on-premises and cloud-based deployment options. Cisco expects to make the solution available in the second quarter. The TX9000 will also begin shipping in the second... newsfactor.com » | Cisco on Thursday spent $5 billion on what it sees as part of its future. The networking giant announced its intent to acquire video software and content security solutions provider NDS Group.
NDS has made a name of itself in the video space by combining a software platform with services to deliver differentiated video offerings to service providers. These offerings let subscribers view, search and navigate digital content on any device. The end goal is to help content providers securely deliver and monetize video.
The NDS acquisition ties in with Cisco's Videoscape, a platform that spans the cloud, the network and end-user clients and is a key part of its overall video strategy. Cisco is betting its $5 billion investment will expand its reach into new emerging markets, such as China and India, where NDS has an established customer footprint.
"Our strategy has always been driven by customer need and on capturing market transitions," said John Chambers, chairman and CEO of Cisco. "Our acquisition of NDS fits squarely into this strategy, enabling content and service providers to deliver new video solutions that leverage the cloud and drive new monetization opportunities and service differentiation."
Cisco's Video Pillar
Cisco said the NDS acquisition reflects its increased strategic focus on video, one of its five foundational priorities. It also demonstrates Cisco's "build, buy and partner" strategy to grow through combination of organic innovation, targeted acquisitions and strategic partnering.
"This has all the earmarks of a great acquisition for Cisco," said Zeus Kerravala, principal analyst at ZK Research. "Cisco is trying to enable more customization of content out of the network whereas Apple is trying to do it more through equity. This complements what consumer electronics manufacturers are doing without Cisco having to get into the space."
Kerravala sees the NDS purchase as a strong move for Cisco. NDS is known... newsfactor.com » | Москва, 9 февраля 2012 года. Cisco plans to acquire BNI Video for $99 million.
A privately held company in Boxborough, Mass., BNI Video supplies service providers with two video products that offer video back-office and content delivery network, or CDN, analytic capabilities.
Cisco is looking to BNI's technology to beef up its Videoscape TV platform. Videoscape lets service providers deliver video to any device over any Internet Protocol network. Cisco said BNI Video's technology would also help its service provider customers reduce operational costs and complexity and expand opportunities to monetize content.
"Cisco is committed to working with our service provider customers to deliver next-generation IP-based video experiences across devices," said Marthin De Beer, senior vice president and general manager of Cisco's Emerging Business Group. The BNI Video acquisition is part of that commitment by giving customers migration path to the Videoscape platform.
Cable Industry Encouraged
BNI Video has an industry background that may have attracted Cisco to become more than an investor. Along with Cisco, Comcast and Time Warner Cable were early investors in BNI Video.
Tony Werner, chief technology officer for Comcast, said BNI's technology has the potential to "play a critical role in advancing video experiences for Comcast's customers," and is encouraged by Cisco's acquisition of the company.
Likewise, Mike LaJoie, chief technology officer at Time Warner Cable, said the companies joining forces is an opportunity to "take video service providers to the next level with Internet video, helping to manage networks more efficiently to deliver advanced TV entertainment experiences to consumers."

The Silicon Valley company said that the total number of network-connected devices would reach 15 billion in 2015, two for every person on the planet, and that net traffic would reach 966 exabytes per year. Cisco predicted that traffic volume would rise by 200 exabytes from 2014 to 2015, a figure that is greater than the entire amount of global Internet traffic in 2010.
According to the company's fifth annual Visual Networking Forecast, the huge growth in traffic will be driven by an increasing number of devices, faster broadband speed, and a growth in Internet users to 3 billion people, or 40 percent of the world's population. Also contributing to the Internet traffic will be an exponential growth in online video, with a predicted 1 million video minutes traversing the Internet every second.
Cisco's report predicted that the Asia Pacific region will generate the most Internet traffic with an average of 24.1 exabytes a month, surpassing the current leader North America, which will use 22.3 exabytes per month. However the fastest growing regions will be Africa and the Middle East which will see traffic grow eightfold, just beating out Latin America's projected sevenfold increase.
PC's will still generate the vast majority of Internet traffic, but their share of the total will drop from 97 per cent currently to 87 per cent in 2015. Smartphone Internet traffic meanwhile will increase 26-fold to about 7 per cent of total traffic.
"The explosive growth in Internet data traffic, especially video, creates an opportunity in the years ahead for optimizing and monetizing visual, virtual and mobile Internet experiences," said Cisco executive Suraj Shetty. newsfactor.com » | With demand for mobile video on the rise, wireless networks are going to feel the strain.
