The Amazon Appstore has quickly become a major force in paid mobile app sales for Google's Android platform, according to a new report from Distimo. The mobile app analytics firm found that 42 of the top 110 paid mobile apps available from both Google and Amazon generated more revenue through the Amazon Appstore than Android Market last month.
Amazon's new Kindle Fire, which sold more than 3.9 million units in the final three months of 2011, was the driving force behind Amazon's mobile app sales in January. However, Amazon may also have benefited from having less clutter in its Appstore, which offers about 26,800 apps as opposed to the 400,000-plus apps on tap in Android Market.
Only 32 percent of the mobile offerings at Android Market were paid apps in January. By contrast, paid mobile apps in Amazon's Appstore accounted for around 65 percent of the total and have also been selling for substantially less than what Google charges, on average.
The average price of the top 100 paid applications in the Amazon Appstore is 40 percent lower than in the Google Android Market, said Hendrik Koekkoek, author of the report for Distimo, which is based in Utrecht, The Netherlands.
"One of the reasons could be that Amazon is responsible for setting the price in its store," Koekkoek said. "While all available paid apps are $3.13 in the Google Android Market, these applications are $2.77 in the Amazon Appstore."
Creating a Platform Within a Platform
What Amazon appears to be doing is creating a platform within a platform, and is off to a good start with more than 26,000 apps already in stock, said Al Hilwa, director of applications software development at IDC.
"By leveraging the Android ecosystem, Amazon is able to bring apps very quickly [to market]," Hilwa said. "The work involved in... newsfactor.com »

Global shipments of tablets reached 26.8 million units in the final three months of 2011 -- a 150 percent year-over-year surge from the year-earlier period, according to Strategy Analytics. Though Apple's iPad continued to remain on top with a 58 percent market share, unit shipments of Android tablets reached record levels.
During the fourth quarter, Apple shipped 15.4 million iPads. However, Android-based devices captured a 39 percent share -- up from 29 percent in the same quarter of 2010, said Strategy Analytics Executive Director Neil Mawston.
"Dozens of Android models distributed across multiple countries by numerous brands such as Amazon, Samsung, Asus and others have been driving volumes," Mawston said. "Global Android tablet shipments tripled annually to 10.5 million units."
According to mobile app analytics firm Flurry, however, Android's huge leap in tablet market share is due in major part to Amazon's introduction of the Kindle Fire last October. Claiming to track more than 20 percent of all Internet consumer sessions on over 90 percent of all Android devices each day, Flurry believes the Kindle Fire has already reached parity with Samsung's Galaxy Tab offerings.
Kindle Fire Usage Flares
Flurry defines an Android tablet session as the launch and subsequent exit, or pause for more than 10 seconds, of an app. Last November, Samsung's Galaxy Tab models accounted for 63 percent of all Android tablet app sessions monitored by the firm. By the end of January, however, Amazon's Kindle Fire and Samsung's Galaxy Tab platforms were effectively tied with 35.7 percent and 35.6 percent session shares, respectively.
"In January, after the holiday boom in devices and in apps, we see that strong adoption of Kindle Fire, combined with significant downloads driven from the Amazon App Store, resulted in a massive surge in session usage that just edges out the Galaxy Tab," said Flurry... newsfactor.com » | Родной интерфейс Fire очень беден.

На самом деле это не так сложно, как может показаться на первый взгляд. ibnews.com.ua » | Amazon is the current tech-media darling after the smashing successful unveiling of its Kindle Fire, complete with its Silk browser and cloud services. Now, some speculate that Amazon will buy what remains of Palm from Hewlett-Packard.
According to media reports, Amazon is in deep negotiations with HP to buy Palm, creator of the webOS operating system that runs on HP's failed TouchPad. HP paid $1.2 billion for Palm and has decided to kill webOS hardware projects after failing to execute on its strategic plan for the assets.
"Amazon has one device that's based on Kindle OS and one that's based on Android. They need to focus on getting all their devices on the same OS so they can have some fun and games with applications," said Michael Disabato, vice president of network and telecom at Gartner. "It's possible that Amazon is looking at webOS because Google is taking Android out of the public domain."
Amazon-Palm Connections
The rumors around Amazon buying webOS aren't completely far-fetched. Palm CEO Jon Rubenstein sits on Amazon's board of directors. And Rubenstein has publicly stated that Amazon would make a great partner in expanding the webOS ecosystem. And that's just the problem: the lack of a robust webOS ecosystem.
"WebOS still doesn't have as much of an ecosystem as Android or iOS. So without any apps why would anyone want it? People are buying the iPads because they look sleek and they are fancy, but when you come down to it they don't care about what's inside it," Disabato said. "It's all about the applications."
In fact, Disabato reasoned that a lack of apps is one of the reasons HP decided to shutter its tablet business. From his point of view, the only reason the HP TouchPad flew off the shelf at $99 was because many consumers believe they can find... newsfactor.com » | A possible Amazon tablet, whose release later this year could be the first major challenge to the category's dominance by Apple's iPad, is coming into focus with additional reports on the web. The rumors point to a 7-inch, multi-touch device that could help reshape Amazon's website and other parts of its huge retail ecosystem.
At least one technology site reports seeing a test device, running Android 2.2 with an Amazon-customized interface. The tablet will be oriented to Amazon's own Android Appstore, which launched in May, rather than to Google's Android Marketplace, to which many other Android devices point.
Site Redesign
Rumors also indicate that the tablet will be priced at $250, a direct challenge to the iPad's starting price of $499, and that the product will launch in November. A 10-inch version, with a more powerful processor, could follow in early 2012.
Amazon is expected to use its marketing strength and distribution channels to support the tablet, possibly including free subscriptions to Amazon Prime, which gives the subscriber access to the company's video streaming service, as well as free shipping on products.
According to a report in Monday's Wall Street Journal, Amazon is in the process of testing a redesign of its site, in order to optimize its use on a tablet -- either Apple's, its own, or someone else's. Currently, customers can access the site through a browser or a tablet-specific app, and the redesign would affect those using a browser.
Sally Fouts, a spokeswoman for Amazon, told the Journal that the new design was being made available to some customers, but she couldn't "speculate on when the new design will be live for everyone." She said testing for the new design only began in the last week.
The new design emphasizes digital products, rather than physical ones.
Android Amazon.
У пользователей приложений для мобильных операционных систем словосочетание App Store на данный момент ассоциируется с сервисом Apple, поэтому регистрация торговой марки вполне уместна, полагают в Купертино. ixbt.com » | Слухи о планшетном компьютере, с которым крупнейший онлайновый ритейлер хочет войти в новый для себя бизнес, вновь всплыли, когда прошла информация, будто это устройство выпустит Samsung. news.rambler.ru » 2011-04-27 12:57 news.rambler.ru / Новости / | Appolicious - Amazon (AMZN) is much more than just the online shopping hotspot it started out as.
